Recall Alert: 2013 Volvo S60, XC60

2013VolvoS60

Volvo is recalling just seven model-year 2013 S60 sedans and XC60 crossovers due to identification labels with an incorrect manufacture year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Affected vehicles were manufactured on Jan. 7. An incorrect date of manufacture on the certification label means the vehicles are noncompliant with regulation requirements, and owners may not be able to determine whether their vehicles are affected by future recalls.

The recall began March 8. Volvo has already quarantined the affected vehicles and will install correct labels before sale; no owner notification letters will be sent. For more info call NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov.

Volvo Lowers Price, Ups Mileage on Entry-Level XC60

Frontangle3_mh Volvo’s compact luxury SUV receives a new model that gives shoppers a less expensive option for getting into an XC60. The new XC60 3.2 starts at $32,395 and forgoes the turbocharged six-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive of the current XC60 T6 ($37,200). The all-wheel-drive model is available with the new non-turbocharged engine and starts at $34,395.

Pricing for the new model is now in line with its competitors such as the Acura RDX ($33,895) and higher-end Volkswagen Tiguan (front-wheel-drive SEL, $30,990). The T6 is a better fit with cars like the BMW X3 ($39,700) and Land Rover LR2 ($35,375).

The 3.2’s six-cylinder makes 235 horsepower, and it uses the same engine as Volvo’s S80 sedan. When paired with front-wheel drive, the XC60 3.2’s mileage estimates are 18/27 mpg city/highway. This is a notable improvement over the current T6 with all-wheel drive, rated at 16/22 mpg. We evaluated the T6’s mileage on one of our mileage drives where it returned the lowest numbers between its competitors — the X3 (16/23 mpg) and LR2 (15/22) — on the same drive. Mileage estimates are not currently available for the all-wheel-drive 3.2.

XC60 3.2 models include 17-inch wheels instead of the T6’s 18s, otherwise the 3.2 is comparably equipped to the more expensive T6 model. Similar Premium, Climate, Convenience, Multimedia and Technology Packages are available.

Cars.com Mileage Challenge 4.5: Final Thoughts

Cars.com Mileage Challenge 4.4: The Premium Problem

Mcgascap

Yesterday we brought you results from Cars.com’s latest mileage challenge, a 300-plus-mile trip, mostly on highways. The BMW X3 came in first with 23.7 mpg. The Land Rover LR2 came in second with 22.8 mpg, while the Volvo XC60 brought up the rear with 21.0 mpg.

Case closed? Not quite. Premium cars often need premium gas, but these cars are a diverse bunch. BMW’s high-tech Valvetronic engines — like the one in the X3 — require premium fuel. For the LR2, Land Rover merely recommends premium; spokeswoman Kim Binder-Daniel said regular will do, though “performance will degrade.”

Cars.com Mileage Challenge 4.3: The Results

The spring’s mileage challenge took three entry-level luxury crossovers — the BMW X3, Land Rover LR2 and Volvo XC60 — on 300-plus miles of mostly highway driving around northeast Illinois and southern Wisconsin. The results? Read on:

Cars.com Mileage Challenge 4.2: Sport Mode

Mcx3sportmodel

Yesterday, we outlined the routes and cars for our latest mileage challenge: about 315 miles, mostly highway, in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. We’ll report the full results tomorrow; today, we’re looking at the effects of Sport mode, something many luxury cars and an increasing number of non-luxury models offer. The X3 and LR2 both had it, activated by moving the shifter from Drive to the manual-shift gate.

2010 Volvo XC60 Priced at $37,200

XC60 Volvo announced base pricing for the 2010 XC60 T6 AWD at $37,200, not including a destination charge of $825. This includes standard features such as leather seats, Sirius Satellite Radio, HD radio and Bluetooth. Also, if you get in line quickly, Volvo will also throw in a panoramic moonroof.

Several option packages include a Climate Package for $1,000, a Technology Package for $2,700, Collision Avoidance for $1,695 and a Convenience Package for $1,000.

This price is right in-line with premium competition like the new Mercedes-Benz GLK350 with AWD ($35,900) and BMW X3 ($39,700). But will folks buy a Volvo for that much money? A fully loaded AWD VW Tiguan can be had for $32,565, and an Acura RDX and Infiniti EX35 also cost less than the Volvo.

The new Volvo XC60 is scheduled to go on sale this March.

2010 Volvo XC60: First Drive

Volvoxc60

The compact luxury crossover segment is set to rapidly expand with the introduction of all-new models like the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class and Volvo XC60, which I recently drove near San Francisco. As you can imagine, that’s a stunning setting in which to test a new car, and for the most part the all-wheel-drive XC60 was a pleasant companion for the 130 miles I logged behind the wheel.

Season Recap: The Best SUVs

Suvrecap

We’ve already recapped our favorite efficient cars and hybrids, but what about the SUVs? Even with sky-high gas prices, new SUVs of all sizes are coming to market. This year brought some of the best interiors and fuel efficiency yet in this segment, but what glorified station wagon took our staff’s hearts?

Joe Wiesenfelder:
2009 Volvo XC60
Put simply, there were some impressive redesigns this year, but I have to go with an all-new entry — especially when it's a smaller alternative to an existing SUV: The XC60 is a handsome vehicle with a high-quality interior and all the safety features you could possibly want. It isn't too small in practical terms compared to the XC90, but it is smaller. These days, smaller is better.

Cars.com's resident Suburban Dad, Patrick Olsen, takes a look at Volvo's new SUV, the XC60. It competes with the BMW X3 and Land Rover LR2 but is remarkably large for what's considered a compact segment. Patrick shows off the cargo area and rear seat room, as well as the fancy interior duds.
