Mercedes-Benz SplitView Has Double the Information

Splitview

Mercedes-Benz, in its never-ending quest to offer more comfort at any price, has developed a multitasking GPS display screen. Dubbed SplitView, the 8-inch display is programmed to transmit two different images — one for the driver, one for the front passenger — at once.

It’s pretty technical, but the short version is that the screen uses a masking filter so that when viewed from different angles, different images appear.

For instance, the driver can access climate information or directions while the front passenger watches a DVD or TV show. Mercedes says it’s aware of the distractions this may cause, so passengers watching TV can use headphones and a remote control to limit driver irritation.

SplitView will be available on the S-Class starting in the summer of 2009.

Cars.com Reviews 2008 Mercedes-Benz S550

Mbemblem

The Mercedes-Benz S550 is already a Cars.com Best Bet, and it took the prize as Best Car for the Boss in the 2008 installment of our annual Lifestyle Awards. Clearly, the biggest Benz deserved a full review for the 2008 model year, and reviewer Mike Hanley was just the man to do it. In terms of power and refinement, the S550 is at the pinnacle in its class. Plus, the interior is as elegant as it gets.

Mercedes' New S600 Limo

S600limo_1

You’re looking at the future of transportation for politicians, royalty and high-powered executives everywhere. The armored S600 Guard Pullman is the latest Mercedes-Benz limousine to hit the driveways of posh estates worldwide, and it comes with a bevy of security and luxury features.

The main selling point, though, is security; the press release touts its ability to protect against terrorist attacks. We think that’s the first time we’ve ever read the word “terrorist” in a car press release. The armor has passed rigorous testing and can withstand small-arms fire and small explosive devices, like hand grenades. The tires are run-flat, the fuel tank is self-sealing and there is a fire extinguishing system.

It also has a 517 horsepower twin-turbo V-12 engine to move all that heavy armored sheet metal from place to place, and its color and interior treatments can be completely customized, for those discerning dignitaries.

Mercedes-Benz S 550, A Gentleman's Saloon

S5502

In Europe they call sedans saloons — just one of those weird cultural differences that make overseas journalists feel superior. Well, I just finished a week testing the all-new S 550, and it could make me change how I talk, dress and even style my hair — it is that extreme a cultural change from other vehicles I’ve tested.

Sliding into the supple heated and cooled leather seats amid all the brushed metal and wood trim feels like stepping into an exclusive country club, not a four-door luxury car. Everything from the finishes to the amber lighting exudes class.
