Recall Alert: 2013 Nissan NV200

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 2,529 units of the Nissan NV200 van manufactured Feb. 6 through Aug. 2, 2013.

The Problem: In the affected vehicles, improper wire routing could cause a short circuit and blow the battery terminal fuse. If this happens while driving, the fuel pump will stop, causing the engine to stall.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect the wiring harness and apply a protective covering to it for free.

What Owners Should Do: Nissan will notify owners starting in mid-December. Owners can call Nissan at 800-647-7261 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236 for more information.

GM Borrows Nissan's NV200

Nissan's NV200 van will wear a new brand badge in 2014. General Motors and Nissan announced today that the NV200-based Chevrolet City Express will go on sale in the fall of 2014.

Nissan will manufacture the small cargo van, and Chevrolet will sell it through its dealer network in the U.S. and Canada. Nissan currently sells the NV200, which uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, in several global markets. In the U.S. it'll hit the streets of New York City in taxi form later this year. Chevrolet hasn't released specs, but Nissan's version can carry up to 1,500 pounds and offers 123 cubic feet of cargo space, 6.6 cubic feet less than its closest competitor, the Ford Transit Connect.

"Our fleet customers have asked us for an entry in the commercial small van segment, so this addition to the Chevrolet portfolio will strengthen our position with fleets and our commercial customers," Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet and Commercial Sales, said in a statement.

Both companies have said more specifics, including pricing, will be available closer to the van's on-sale date.

Recall Alert: 2013 Nissan Titan, NV Commercial Van

Nissan is recalling 2,180 model-year 2013 versions of the Titan pickup truck and NV commercial van due to a problem with the transmission shift lever, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The affected vehicles were manufactured from Jan. 22 through Feb. 20, 2013 (check your vehicle's build date on a sticker on the driver-side doorjamb) and have faulty steering column-mounted transmission levers. In these vehicles, chemicals from the manufacturing process may cause the brake shift interlock device to malfunction, allowing the shift lever to be put into Park without depressing the brake pedal. This could lead to an accident.

This is the second recall in two weeks for Nissan's NV commercial van.

Nissan will start notifying owners on Friday, and dealers will inspect and replace the affected parts for free. Owners can call Nissan at 800-647-7261 or NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 for more info.

Recall Alert: 2012-13 Nissan NV Commercial Vans

Nissan is recalling 18,880 model-year 2012 and 2013 NV commercial vans due to a problem with the transmission lever, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Affected vehicles were manufactured from Dec. 20, 2010, through Jan. 4, 2013, and are equipped with steering-column-mounted transmission shift levers. The transmission lever gear selector plate lock clip may have been installed incorrectly, and normal road vibration could make the gear position indicator not match the gear-shift lever position. If this happens, the gear indicator may falsely display that the vehicle is in park, allowing it to roll away unexpectedly and increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Nissan will begin notifying owners April 8, and dealers will correct the installation of the transmission lever gear selector plate lock clip for free. Owners may call Nissan at 800-647-7261, or NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to

Big Families Find Choices are Limited for Full-Size Vans

Update 11/13/2012: Today, Ford unveiled its seven-passenger Transit Connect Wagon; this article has been updated to reflect the new information.

What do you do when your family gets really big—bigger than a minivan can handle? With more than five kids, your vehicle choices narrow so quickly your head will spin. There are options for families of eight or more, though they can be counted on just one hand. However, there's something to be said for only having a few choices because it limits analysis paralysis.

Ford is adding a player to the large-van market with its 2014 Transit Connect Wagon (photo above), which was first announced in September. The tall van features minivan-like sliding side doors and room for seven passengers. The Transit Connect Wagon looks more modern than Ford's current large family hauler, the E-Series Wagon, and will use a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder or an optional turbocharged 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. Ford expects it to get an EPA-rating of at least 30 mpg on the highway. The Transit will debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show and is scheduled to be on lots in late 2013.

If your growing family is bursting the seams of your minivan or three-row crossover, there are several options on dealership lots now. Be warned: Most manufacturers don't offer a plethora of nice-to-have features on these large family vans, but like having privacy while in the bathroom, you knew you'd lose that once you started having a family.

2013 Nissan NV200 at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show

  • Competes with: Ford Transit Connect, Ram C/V
  • Looks like: A snub-nosed minivan from the '80s
  • Drivetrain: 2.0-liter four-cylinder; continuously variable automatic transmission
  • Hits dealerships: Early 2013

First, there was the Ford Transit Connect and then the Ram C/V, and now the 2013 Nissan NV200 will join the small, light-duty commercial van marketplace.

You may have seen the 2013 Nissan NV200 before, especially if you live in New York City. The compact cargo van was selected to be the Big Apple's next-generation taxi cab late last year. The model was also presented in an electrified version, known as the e-NV200, at the 2012 Detroit auto show.

Nissan to Show Off NV, Refreshed 370Z in Chicago

Nissan nv200 taxi
Nissan has confirmed that it plans to unveil two vehicles at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show next month. A new addition to the NV commercial vehicle family and a freshened-for-2013 370Z will make their debuts in the Windy City.

Although Nissan hasn't released which NV will be at the show, we're guessing it might be the NV200 passenger vehicle, a truck considerably smaller than the automaker's 2012 NV 1500, 2500 and 3500 cargo vans. The NV200 is sold in around 40 countries, and Nissan has said that it plans to make it available in the U.S.

Nissan unveiled an electric version of the NV200 at this year's Detroit auto show in the form of the e-NV200 concept. We also saw the NV200 in taxi trim last year in New York. The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission has chosen it to become the city's exclusive taxi beginning in late 2013.

Nissan's current 370Z sports coupe and convertible were last redesigned for the 2009 model year. Check back with us in early February for more from the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.

Recall Alert: 14,718 2011-12 Nissan and Infiniti Vehicles

2012 infiniti m
Nissan is recalling 14,718 model-year 2011 and 2012 Nissan and Infiniti vehicles due to faulty engine bolts, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced. The recall affects the 2011 Infiniti FX, 2012 Infiniti M, 2011-12 Nissan Frontier, 2011-12 Nissan Xterra, 2011-12 Nissan Pathfinder and 2012 Nissan NV.

The affected bolts connecting the engine oil cooler and the engine oil filter to the engine and may have been manufactured below specification strength. Weak bolts could break and lead to an engine oil leak. If there is a leak, the engine oil warning lamp will illuminate, and the engine may become noisy. If the driver ignores the condition, the engine could seize, increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan will begin notifying owners on Jan. 19. Nissan and Infiniti dealers will inspect and replace relevant parts free of charge. For more info, owners can call Nissan at 800-647-7261 or NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.

Nissan NV Van Can Now Carry Up to 12 Passengers

ButtonsIn Nissan's bid to develop a full-fledged competitor to the successful Ford E-Series (formerly called the Econoline/Club Wagon) and the less-successful Chevy Express and GMC Savana full-size vans, the carmaker has added a passenger version to the relatively new NV cargo van.

Simply called the 2012 NV3500 HD Passenger Van, the vehicle has four rows of seats to accommodate up to 12 passengers. Although this model is geared mainly to big livery operators such as airports or hotels, Nissan says it will also be sold for personal use.
