How Did Lexus Mess Up a Heated Steering Wheel?

2014_GX_2

A heated steering wheel is one of those comfort features that once experienced you wonder how you ever managed to live without it.

More Lexus News

That's been especially true this winter around Cars.com's Chicago headquarters, where the temperature has dipped below zero degrees on 22 days and more subzero weather is on the way.

That also is why some Cars.com editors were mildly frosted — though none suffered frostbite — when they recently test-drove Lexus models with steering wheels that were only partially heated.

The indignity.

2014 Lexus LX 570 Review

2014LexusLX570

Cars.com reviewer Joe Bruzek says the 2014 Lexus LX 570 is on a great luxury-SUV platform, boasting a comfortable ride, cushy seats and capable performance. But with its last redesign occurring for 2008, this aging fellow is just sitting at his desk just waiting for the ol' tap on the shoulder as younger, less-expensive competitors pass him by. Want extravagant comfort? There's the Infiniti QX80. Off-road skills? Land Rover Range Rover is eager to please. Is the LX 570 still worth its price tag? Read Bruzek's review and decide.

2014 Lexus LX 570 Real-World Cargo Space

Lexus_lx570

There are full-size SUVs — like the crossover Chevrolet Traverse — and then there are FULL-size SUVs. The 2014 Lexus LX 570 is the latter, built on a towering trucklike body-on-frame chassis with genuine four-wheel-drive hardware underneath. Loading cargo into the LX 570 isn't as cumbersome as it could be because the high-riding SUV has a standard height-adjustable air suspension with the capability to automatically lower the vehicle when the ignition is turned off.

Research the 2014 Lexus LX 570

The cargo area is unique in some ways and dated in others: Each side of the 50/50-split third-row power seat folds up to the side of the cargo area to expose the maximum cargo area. Unfortunately, the side-folding rear seats take up a lot of the cargo area's width. The LX 570's clamshell tailgate and tumble-forward second row are lesser-used styles among big luxury SUVs.

What Does This Button Do?

IMG_0086

We've found it, folks. The elusive ejector seat lives on, and it's not in James Bond's Aston Martin. If this coveted button followed through on what its illustration promises, it would make the eight-passenger 2014 Lexus LX 570 luxury SUV into a seven-passenger vehicle during a henchman hijacking.

More Curious Buttons

Luckily for gabby front passengers — and frail henchmen — the button doesn't eject an unwanted guest through roof, but it does make getting out of the LX 570 easier, and with much more grace than being launched out of the car.

2014 Lexus LX 570: Car Seat Check

14LX570_main

The 2014 Lexus LX 570 is a large SUV that could easily be called a land yacht. With seating for eight, the LX 570's largess comes in handy when it comes to child-safety seats; we were able to fit three car seats across its second row. However, it fell short in the third row because it doesn't have any Latch or tether anchors, so we couldn't install a forward-facing convertible there.

How many car seats fit in the second row? Three

How many car seats fit in the third row? Because there are no tether anchors, we only installed the booster seat in the third row.

2013 lexus lx 570
Lexus’ largest SUV took model-year 2012 off, but it returns for 2013 with fresh exterior styling, an updated interior and a slightly higher base price.

The automaker recently announced that the 2013 Lexus LX 570 will have an $80,930 base price (excluding an $875 destination fee) when it goes on sale in February. The 2013 model will cost $1,475 more than the outgoing version.

Other new-for-2013 additions include a beefed up off-road system and an updated version of the Lexus Enform multimedia system.

2013 Lexus LX Chases Infiniti QX For Luxury-Loving Families

IMG_2261
Infiniti has nearly perfected the highly scientific and closely guarded formula required to produce a luxurious family hauler with inspiring performance. The automaker has set the bar high with the QX56 in that regard, with the exception of its design, which is a bit ... unique. Its works, though. In 2011, the QX56 outsold its main rival, the Lexus LX 570, 13,428 units to 3,167.

Now Lexus is trying to catch up with a refreshed 2013 LX 570.

While I haven't had the opportunity to drive the new LX 570 with my family in tow, initial reports look promising. With many features similar to my favorites in the QX, such as a wide-view front and side camera feature allowing you to see what's in front of your bumper while moving at up to 7.5 mph, the 2013 LX 570 could be a contender, or maybe even a leader, in the uber-lux large SUV segment.

2013 Lexus LX 570 at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show

2013 lexus lx 570

  • Competes with: Land Rover Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Cadillac Escalade
  • Looks like: Lexus borrowed just the right amount of GS sedan styling
  • Drivetrain: 383-hp, 5.7-liter V-8; six-speed-automatic transmission
  • Hits dealerships: February (tentatively)

Sometimes we cringe when an automaker shares styling across its lineup of cars and SUVs. The corporate look doesn’t always translate well from sedan to SUV; Infiniti QX56, anyone? Lexus is taking that chance with a refreshed 2013 LX 570 that borrows front styling from the significantly redesigned 2013 Lexus GS sedan. Other than the styling, the interior sees minor updates for 2013.

The new look has an hourglass-shaped grille, and in photos, it translates well onto Lexus’ largest — and priciest — SUV. The grille isn’t the only new feature up front. There are new LED daytime running lamps in a fresh headlight design, as well as larger fog light bezels. Turn signals are added to the side mirrors, while in back, there’s a revised rear bumper with additional stainless-steel accents.
