2014 Lexus GX 460 Real-World Cargo Space

IMG_1396

From the outside, it doesn't look like the 2014 Lexus GX 460 can seat seven occupants on three rows of seats. Some three-row SUVs are appropriately massive looking, but the GX doesn't look like it should have enough room for three rows. It does, but just barely.

2014 Lexus GX 460 Expert Review

Behind the third row is a skimpy 11.6 cubic feet of cargo room. Cars.com reviewer Mike Hanley says the cargo room behind the third row isn't very usable because the third row nearly touches the rear window. There's not much space for taller objects since the third row and window almost meet. Folding the third row uncorks 46.7 cubic feet on its way to a maximum 64.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

2014 Lexus GX 460 Review

2014LexusGX460

Reading Cars.com reviewer Mike Hanley's critique of the 2014 Lexus GX 460, one gets the distinct impression he thinks the luxury SUV is fine, but just can't seem to find much to get excited about. He likes new front-end styling, dominated by an in-your-face interpretation of Lexus' hourglass-shaped spindle grille, though that boldness doesn't carry through to the rest of the vehicle. Meanwhile, some notably old-school-SUV driving dynamics and dated interior flourishes are further examples of how remarkably unremarkable the GX 460 is in many ways. Read Hanley's review below.

How Did Lexus Mess Up a Heated Steering Wheel?

2014_GX_2

A heated steering wheel is one of those comfort features that once experienced you wonder how you ever managed to live without it.

More Lexus News

That's been especially true this winter around Cars.com's Chicago headquarters, where the temperature has dipped below zero degrees on 22 days and more subzero weather is on the way.

That also is why some Cars.com editors were mildly frosted — though none suffered frostbite — when they recently test-drove Lexus models with steering wheels that were only partially heated.

The indignity.

The Cars That Beat This Winter

SnowRubicon

If it seems like we're covering the winter weather all the time that's because there hasn't been much of a break in the snow and cold to write anything else. Luckily, we've been able to pilot some true foul-weather standouts in our test fleet in Chicago and Detroit this season.

2014 Lexus GX 460 Video

Beyond its massive, newfangled spindle grille, the restyled 2014 Lexus GX 460 feels like a big SUV from a bygone era — and not necessarily in a good way. That old-school aura extends to the luxury SUV's handling, interior and fuel economy, Cars.com reviewer Mike Hanley says. An updated multimedia touch-screen is one bright spot in a cabin dominated by outdated trim, and cargo space is thin behind the cramped third row. Still, nobody in the first two rows will complain of discomfort from their cushy leather thrones. Watch the video.

Which Cars Fit Three Car Seats?

2013-nissan-armada-3-car-seats
UPDATE 10/15/2013:
Parents are often searching for the automotive holy grail: a car that's not a minivan and can fit three child-safety seats across the backseat. It's a short list.

In the more than three years that Cars.com editors have been installing car seats into test vehicles, we've come across several vehicles that can hold three car seats across a backseat.

The newest vehicle to make our list is the 2014 Honda Odyssey. The minivan has loads of room and plenty of accessible Latch anchors.

As we come across more cars that fit three child-safety seats, we'll add to this list. For now, here are the cars from our Car Seat Checks that can fit three car seats in the second row:

2013 Lexus GX 460: Real-World Mileage

GXmpg1

It's the end of summer, and that means another trip to take my daughter back to school. This time out, we made the college run in a 2013 Lexus GX 460. Overall, it provided a capable, if crowded, ride, but it was one that improved my impression of the luxury SUV on the road and at the pump.

First, let's get to the mileage.

Cars.com Reviews the 2013 Lexus GX 460

2013-lexus-gx460
The 2013 Lexus GX 460 has a comfortable interior and all the gadgets required on a premium vehicle, but it loses major points in the refinement area due to its trucklike ride, says Cars.com reviewer Kristin Varela. Although her family found plenty of room in the SUV's second row, less cargo space than many competitors and an awkward side-hinged cargo door were two big annoyances.
