GM to Replace Ignition Keys on Certain New SUVs, Pickup Trucks

IMG_0753

GM will replace the ignition keys in its redesigned full-size SUVs and pickup trucks with a smaller key. The company issued a safety bulletin on Nov. 6 because the automatic transmission's column shifter can inadvertently move the key out of the "run" position if it bumps into it during shifting. Affected models include the 2014 and 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickups, the related 2015 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs, the 2014 and 2015 GMC Sierra pickups, and the related 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs.

It sounds like another ignition-related problem for an automaker that's seen more than half of the 26.8 million cars recalled in the U.S. during 2014 stem from such issues, but this is much less serious. For starters, it's not a recall. The condition occurs only if you adjust the steering column to its highest point, apply the brakes and move the column shifter between gears — presumably while the car is stopped — so GM maintains it isn't a safety problem. For any owners who experience the issue, dealers will replace the key with a smaller design that doesn't bump the shifter.

The Problem: The chassis electronic module may be internally contaminated, resulting in an electrical short, which could cause the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the chassis electronic module for free. The automaker has not yet announced a notification schedule.

Recall Alert: 124,000 GM Cars, Crossovers

2014BuickEncoreRecall

Vehicles Affected: More than 124,000 GM vehicles, including model-year 2013-14 Buick Encore crossovers and Cadillac ATS cars; 2014 Cadillac CTS and ELR cars; 2014 Chevrolet Caprice and SS cars; and 2014-15 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks

The Problem: Due to an incomplete weld on the seat hook bracket assembly, the front seats in the affected vehicles may not stay secured in place during a high-load condition such as a crash, increasing the risk of an injury. We first reported on this issue on July 23.

The Fix: GM will begin notifying owners late this month, and dealers will inspect the seat hook bracket assembly weld and, if necessary, replace the lower seat track for free.

What Owners Should Do: Owners can call Buick at 800-521-7300, Cadillac at 800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 and GMC at 800-462-8782. They can also call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov for more info.

Recall Alert: 392,000 2014-2015 GM Full-Size Pickups, SUVs

2015ChevroletTahoeRecall

Vehicles Affected: Nearly 392,500 full-size pickup trucks and SUVs, including all four-wheel-drive versions of the 2014-15 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, model-year 2015 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs and model-year 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs

The Problem: According to GM, the transfer case may electronically switch to Neutral without input from the driver. If this happens while a vehicle is in motion, no power will go to the wheels. If the vehicle is stopped or parked, it may roll away if the parking brake is not set. The automaker said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue.

The Fix: GM will notify owners and dealers will recalibrate transfer case module software. No notification schedule has been announced.

What Owners Should Do: Owners can call Chevrolet at 866-694-6546 and GMC at 866-996-9463 for more info.

Recall Alert: 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD, GMC Sierra HD

2015ChevroletSilverado2500HD

Vehicles Affected: About 51 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 heavy-duty pickup trucks built between Feb. 11 and Feb. 19, 2014, equipped with the Duramax turbo-diesel.

The Problem: A fuel pump connection on both sides of the fuel transfer pump may not be properly torqued and could result in a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could lead to a fire.

The Fix: Chevy and GMC dealerships, at no charge, will tighten the fuel pump connection to the proper torque specifications to eliminate the potential problem.

What Owners Should Do: According to a GM spokesman, no fires, crashes or injuries have been reported and less than half of the affected vehicles have been bought by consumers. The recall will begin May 19, and owners will be contacted by Chevy and GMC representatives to make an appointment at the closest dealership. For more information, owners can call Chevy at 800-222-1020, GMC at 800-462-8782 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236; they can also visit www.safercar.gov.

GM's Big SUVs Lead Segment in Mileage

2015ChevroletTahoe

GM has released new EPA fuel economy numbers for its newly refreshed and upgraded Chevrolet and GMC full-size SUVs, and they're leading the segment. The 2015 Chevy Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL will come standard with the EcoTec3 all-aluminum 5.3-liter V-8 that debuted in the all-new 2014 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra half-ton pickup trucks last year. The new engine produces more power and offers better city and highway fuel economy than either of the previous 5.3-liter V-8 engines (LC9 or LMG) it replaces.

More Fuel Efficiency News

According to the press release, the new EPA-rated numbers for the Chevy Suburban (and GMC Yukon XL) are 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for two-wheel-drive models, improving the previous engine's numbers by 7 and 9 percent, respectively. Four-wheel-drive models for both the 2015 Yukon XL and Suburban are 15/22. Shorter wheelbase Tahoe and Yukon models with two-wheel drive have an EPA rating of 16/23, with four-wheel-drive models rated at 16/22.
