There, there, performance fans. We know it's been tough for you in recent years as dinky four-cylinder fuel sippers seem to shun you into seclusion like a smoker at a restaurant. GM senses your pain and hopes its first full-fledged performance sedan in nearly two decades — the 2014 Chevrolet SS, debuting this week at the 2013 New York International Auto Show — brings solace to your solitude.

Cars.com reviewer Kelsey Mays says the new SS' 6.2-liter "proper V-8," good for 415 horsepower and as many pounds-feet of torque, will help neglected enthusiasts get their groove back. Cool new features include a pounds-shedding aluminum trunk and hood, 50/50 weight distribution and Chevy's first auto-parking system. Watch the video below for more on the SS.

2014 Chevrolet SS: Up Close

One of the unfortunate effects of Pontiac getting the boot back in 2009 was the G8's premature departure. We don't miss much else of Pontiac, just the V-8-powered, rear-wheel-drive G8 GT. With the 2014 Chevrolet SS, we kind of get the G8 back in the form of a full-size sedan with a V-8 and rear-wheel drive but with a Chevrolet badge instead of a Pontiac one.

The Chevrolet SS takes a huge leap forward in offering a more upscale interior experience compared to the now 5-year-old G8. While both the G8 and SS share development with the Australian Holden Commodore, the SS is based on a next-generation successor of the car the G8 was based on.

GM announced today that the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS will bow March 27 at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

The 2014 model represents the most significant change for the fifth-generation Camaro, according to the automaker. Few details are known about the new Camaro, but check back in the coming days for full coverage leading up to and during the New York auto show.

The Camaro SS completes a trifecta of GM performance vehicles on display next week in New York, joining the 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible and Chevrolet SS sedan.

NASCAR's New Look

2012 CMS Testing Brad Keselowski on Track
NASCAR has a decidedly different look for 2013, with all-new racecars debuting at the Daytona 500 on Sunday. It's a big change that should excite casual car fans as well as those hard-core enthusiasts who paint their favorite driver's number on their face. For the first time in decades, the redesigned racecars look like real street-driven production versions.

Since 2007, NASCAR's Sprint Cup series — its most elite racing tier — featured cars from Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota with the same basic shape and little to distinguish them other than decals used to imitate headlights, grilles and taillights. Fans began to complain about how similar the racecars looked soon after their introduction.

2014 Chevrolet SS: More Photos

GM fans who miss the Pontiac G8 should be happy about the latest addition to the Chevrolet family. The 2014 SS, based on the next-generation Holden VF Commodore from Australia, will go on sale later this year.

The new rear-wheel-drive performance sedan debuted last weekend at the Daytona International Speedway. The last time the bow-tie brand had a rear-wheel-drive performance sedan in its lineup was the 1996 Impala. The 2014 SS will use the Corvette's 6.2-liter V-8, good for 415 horsepower and 415 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is standard.

2014 Chevrolet SS: First Look

2014-chevrolet-SS
  • Competes with: Hyundai Genesis R-Spec, Dodge Charger SRT8, Ford Taurus SHO
  • Looks like: A proper Pontiac G8 successor
  • Drivetrain: 415-hp, 6.2-liter V-8; six-speed automatic transmission; rear-wheel drive
  • Hits dealerships: Late 2013

Chevrolet has unveiled its new top-of-the-line high-performance sedan based on the next-generation Holden VF Commodore from Australia. Shown just before the 2013 Daytona 500 NASCAR race in Florida — where it will compete on Feb. 24 — the new 2014 Chevrolet SS shares a platform with the Camaro and new Caprice police car. It will slot above the Impala in both performance and price when it goes on sale later this year. If the lines look somewhat familiar, they should — GM used to sell the last generation of this sedan through Pontiac outlets as the G8, where it was a favorite of car enthusiasts but relatively unknown among the general public.

The new rear-wheel-drive sedan will be a performance halo vehicle for the Chevrolet brand. It features the Corvette's LS3 V-8 engine: 6.2 liters of naturally aspirated muscle motor making 415 horsepower and 415 pounds-feet of torque routed through a six-speed automatic transmission. It is Chevrolet's first rear-wheel-drive performance sedan for the U.S. market since the demise of the last Impala SS in 1996.

2014 Chevrolet SS Performance Sedan Made Official

2014 Chevrolet SS Performance Sedan

Enthusiasts still in shock over the departure of the Pontiac G8 have a new savior. Chevrolet made it official today: The automaker will launch a new performance sedan called the 2014 Chevrolet SS in early 2013.

Like the G8, the SS borrows its shape and mechanicals from a Holden Commodore. Unlike the G8, however, the SS will be available only with a V-8 engine. The SS will be based off the upcoming VF Commodore, which is a refreshed version of the Commodore on which the G8 was based. Don't expect the dead Pontiac and the new Chevrolet to look the same.

The model marks Chevrolet's first rear-wheel-drive sedan in over 17 years, according to the automaker. It will arrive in limited production early next year, and it will replace the Impala racecar at NASCAR's Sprint Series in 2013, too, GM says.
