Cars.com Reviews the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

2012 vw beetle
After skipping model-year 2011, Volkswagen’s iconic bug is back for 2012. Along with shedding the “new” moniker in its name, Beetle also lost its girly image. It traded its bud vase and curves for edgier styling and more power, including a new diesel engine. Cars.com senior editor Kristin Varela recommends the Beetle for busy families looking for a zippy, fun-to-drive second car, but she warns that the backseat is tight and road noise is louder than expected.

PickupTrucks.com Tests the 2012 Ford Transit Connect Electric

2012 ford transit connect electric

Ford plans on selling an electric version of its Focus compact car, but the automaker’s first gas-free offering is the Transit Connect Electric. Based on the van that was launched in the U.S. for 2010, the Transit Connect Electric trades the traditional version’s 136-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine for a 74-hp electric motor and a 28-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. But are more robust acceleration and a smaller carbon footprint enough to justify the 2012 Transit Connect Electric’s $35,000 price premium over the base version? According to Cars.com Editor Mike Hanley, Transit Connect Electric’s high cost will be a significant hurdle to its success.

Cars.com Reviews the 2012 Buick Verano

2012 Buick VeranoCompact, entry-level luxury vehicles haven't exactly set the world on fire, at least not here in the U.S. Nonetheless, Buick is taking another swing at the segment, its first attempt since the Buick Skylark was canceled in 1998. The Verano is based on the Chevrolet Cruze, but Buick has done a good job distinguishing it. With a more powerful engine, rich interior and hushed cabin, the Verano feels like a legitimate luxury car, according to Cars.com Industry Analyst Kelsey Mays.

Cars.com Reviews the 2012 Audi A6

2012 Audi A6

For the 2012 model year, the Audi A6 has been completely redesigned, now featuring the same technology-laden design theme of its bigger cousin, the A8. Besides the gee-whiz features and the polarizing styling, the A6’s driving dynamics lag behind a key competitor, the BMW 5 Series, according to Cars.com editor Mike Hanley.

Cars.com Reviews the 2013 Lexus GS 350

2013 Lexus GS 350
Lexus has established a reputation of providing cushy, quiet sedans. With the 2013 GS 350, Lexus aims to improve upon the car’s predecessor, which couldn’t appease the sport-minded and comfort-minded alike. Does it succeed? The sport sedan not only impresses with its intriguing looks, nimble handling and posh interior, but the car signals a turnaround for the luxury brand’s future, according to Cars.com Managing Editor David Thomas.

Cars.com Reviews the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302
While the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 may not be the most powerful Mustang out there, it does the best job of putting all that power to the road, according to Cars.com Managing Editor David Thomas. The Mustang Boss 302 appeals to performance-minded buyers with its barebones interior and track-ready suspension, yet it still offers a comfortable ride and seats. There's nothing equal to it — certainly nothing for around $40,000, David says.

Cars.com Reviews the 2012 Nissan Altima

2012 Nissan Altima
When thinking of popular nameplates in the midsize car category, names like the Hyundai Sonata or Toyota Camry probably come to mind. But did you know the Nissan Altima is the second best-selling vehicle in the category? This sleeper of a car is a bit sportier than the norm, but otherwise it’s just as adequate as everything else in the midsize field, according to Cars.com editor Mike Hanley.
