Recall Alert: 2003 Honda Accord

2003hondaaccord

Honda is recalling 353,000 2003 model year Honda Accord sedans due to a potential problem with the windshield wipers. Over time, water can leak into the wiper motor, causing corrosion and eventually wiper-motor failure.

The company will inspect all recalled vehicles and replace the wiper motors if corrosion is found. Undamaged vehicles will get a protective shield to prevent future problems. No accidents or injuries have been reported, according to Honda.

Honda Still on Top in U.S., Says Consumer Reports

Honda

For the second year in a row, Consumer Reports has named Honda the automaker selling the best vehicles in the U.S., based on factors ranging from reliability to vehicle comfort.

Toyota and Subaru ranked second and third, followed by BMW, Mazda, Nissan and Volkswagen. No domestic nameplate appeared on the list.

GM Scores Among Award Finalists

Gmlogo

Perhaps marking GM’s reemergence from the automobile wilderness, the domestic car giant makes four of the six finalists for the 2008 North American Car and Truck of the Year award. Even better, the automaker now finds itself in a position to score wins in both Car and Truck of the Year a feat no other company has achieved two years in a row, a feat no other company has achieved.

Truck of the Year finalists include GM’s Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid SUV and Buick Enclave crossover SUV, with Mazda’s CX-9 crossover SUV filling the third spot. As for Car of the Year, the Honda Accord will compete with GM’s Cadillac CTS sport sedan and the highly praised Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan.

Now if the world’s largest auto manufacturer could only transfer this success to sales. While its vehicles continue to improve, the perception of domestic cars in terms of quality and design still lags behind Japanese and European makes. Earning awards is nice, but earning back car shoppers is obviously GM’s more pressing goal.

Mini, BMW, Infiniti Top Best Resale Value List

2008infinitig37

Our list of the cars, trucks and SUVs with the best resale value has just been updated, and a lot of familiar names top the list. When we break down resale values by segment, the Mini Cooper, Honda Accord, Infiniti G35/G37, BMW 5 Series and GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado top their respective segments.

When you take a look at the top 10 resale values overall, it’s the Infiniti G35/G37, Jeep Wrangler and BMW 3 Series taking the top three spots, knocking the Mini Cooper off its previous No. 1 perch.

Which cars rank lowest? The Mazda B2300, Ford Ranger and Suzuki Forenza top that dubious list.

Cars.com Faceoff: 2008 Chevy Malibu, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry

Sedanfaceoff

The best-selling cars on the market are always mainstream midsize sedans. The Honda Accord and Toyota Camry top that list almost every month, but now Chevy has hopes that its redesigned Malibu can make some waves in that pool. Cars.com’s Mike Hanley, David Thomas and Joe Wiesenfelder pitted the four-cylinder versions — the most popular engine choice — against each other to find out which one would win without boring the owner at the same time.

2008 Jeep Liberty

  • I was wowed by the extra-large ragtop sunroof, and the airlock-like sound you get when that top closes. It opened up, letting a lot of sunlight into the car, and gave it a near-convertible feeling. That said, the driving experience left me feeling like I was hovering over the wheels, not really attached to them — just kind of bobbing up and down on the suspension. I didn’t feel directly connected to the road, and there was some pretty noticeable lean in turns. — Patrick Olsen, managing editor

Reader Review of the Week: 2008 Honda Accord

Consreviews_2_1

This week, a tall, demanding car buyer has found something that finally fits: the 2008 Honda Accord. The reason this Pennsylvania native wins the nod this week is that he goes through the reasons why his previous purchases of a Camry and 2007 Accord weren’t right for his large frame. He also points out some pros and cons that are unique to him. You can leave your own reader review for all to see here

Video: Check out the Accord, Camry and Malibu

Chevy Malibu Honda Accord Toyota Camry Video

Last week when I was checking out the new Chevy Malibu for our review, I was also able to test drive the competition, including the Toyota Camry and the new Honda Accord. Having some extra time on my hands, and extra tape in the video camera I was able to highlight some of the difference between the three cars and hopefully give some insight into the hotly contested segment.

Ed. Note: GM supplied all three cars and I believe all three were representative of what consumers would find on dealer lots. They were all near base model, four-cylinder trims. The Honda and Toyota performed similarly to other vehicles provided to us at other times by the respective automakers.

2008 Honda Accord: Through Ian's Lens

We’ve changed the name, but rest assured this photo blog has gotten some great enhancements since we debuted it a few weeks back. This week, I tackle the love-it-or-hate-it styling of the new Honda Accord coupe. You can browse all my shots below, along with commentary on the design.

The Urban Dink: 2008 Honda Accord Coupe

Accord1

I’m not a fan of large coupes that don’t have some kind of performance aspect inherent in their existence. What the heck am I talking about? The Ford Mustang, Pontiac GTO, BMW 335i — they’re worth the two-door, 2+2 seating configuration headaches. Otherwise, I find most coupes — like the new Accord, Pontiac G6, Nissan Altima and the god-awful Toyota Camry Solara — just pointless. Even as an Urban DINK, you might want to go out to dinner with another couple in comfort, and there are plenty of sporty sedans on the market these days.

What does all this spell for my time with the Accord coupe? It has a lot to make up for in my warped mind.

Suburban Dad: 2008 Honda Accord Coupe & Sedan

Hondaaccords

Talk about your yin and yang: I drove both the V-6 Honda Accord coupe and the four-cylinder sedan, and both would be welcome additions to my driveway. The coupe would get the nod as the hip (even for Honda) ride for going around town with the wife, out to dinner or even on long-distance trips, while the sedan (though less fun to drive) could be the commuter car of my dreams, with enough room and access to carry all three kids.

Sales of Redesigned Cars Soar

2008cadillaccts

It sounds like a no-brainer, but guess what? New and redesigned models sell, especially if they get good reviews. Sales figures for September — widely projected to be a slow month for automakers — are in, and redesigned models like the Honda Accord, Cadillac CTS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class are selling well. Really well.

Unfortunately, the automakers don’t break out how many of the cars sold are 2007s versus 2008s, but we were able to glean a few tidbits from the numbers. The Cadillac CTS did the best of the three in terms of percentage increase, showing a 73.5% sales increase over September 2007. If you look at the CTS’ sales in August, they were down 9.1%.

Cars.com Video: 2008 Honda Accord Sedan

Kelsey Mays brings us a thorough walkthrough of the all-new 2008 Honda Accord we’ve been tackling all week. It’s really interesting to see just how big the Accord has become, outside and in. We also found that the Accord is a bit better-looking when in motion.

Which Accord is Right for You?

Exsedan1

As you read this, the first 2008 Accords are trickling into Honda dealerships nationwide. Yesterday, the automaker invited journalists to Chicago’s west suburbs to drive its redesigned flagship. Cars.com staffer Mike Hanley took the Accord through its paces earlier this summer — check out his review — but the rest of us got some much-needed seat time across a range of trim levels. The Accord is a competent family car at any price, but we noticed some distinct differences that could qualify — or disqualify — certain versions for your tastes.

2008 Accord Worth Well Over $600 More

20072008accords

The assignment was to drive a 2007 Honda Accord sedan and a 2008 Accord back-to-back and report whether the new one is worth the $600 price increase. Now, I did so, and though I'm not above drama and suspense, the simple answer is: of course it is. The only way the 2008 wouldn't be worth $600 more than the 2007 is if it sucked, in which case the headline above would read "2008 Honda Accord Sucks!" According to our Kelley Blue Book values, a 2006 Accord LX is worth $1,245 more than a comparably equipped 2005 model, both with 12,000 miles. Recognize that a never-driven 2008 is worth considerably more than a never-driven 2007 — both available at dealerships now — simply because it appears to be a year newer. Then add the fact that the 2008 is a complete redesign, and $600 is nothing. (This ignores Honda's claim that the 2008 adds $1,200 worth of newly standard features.)

Honda Prices All-New 2008 Accord

2008hondaaccord270

Honda’s redesigned 2008 Accord sedan and coupe now have a price, and both go on sale soon, Sept. 12 and 20, respectively. Honda says the average price is up $600 across the line compared to the 2007s, while adding $1,400 in standard equipment. Those numbers seem about right, as the base LX with manual transmission starts at $20,360, not including destination. The top of the line EX-L coupe with a V-6 engine caps the range at $30,510.

Mike Hanley recently reviewed the all-new Accord and came away impressed by the new designs. You can read his review here. A full list of prices for the 2008 Accord range is below.

Cars.com Reviews the All-New 2008 Honda Accord

2008hondaaccord270

Honda lifted the embargo on the all-new 2008 Honda Accord sedan and coupe last night, and now we bring you the full Cars.com review. Mike Hanley recently spent some quality time with the new sedan at an undisclosed location and tested out both the four-cylinder and V-6 engines. His impression overall was very positive, but make sure you read his full review to learn about this new full-size — yes, full-size — sedan.

2008 Honda Accord Expert Review (Cars.com)

The All-New 2008 Honda Accord Sedan

2008hondaaccordsedan

  • Competes with: Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu
  • Looks like: Acura, Infiniti and BMW got together and made a Honda.
  • Drivetrain: 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 with five-speed automatic only or 190-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder and 177-hp, 2.4-liter four cylinder with five-speed automatic or five-speed manual; front-wheel drive
  • Hits dealerships: Mid-September, 2007

There is no more important model in Honda’s lineup than the Accord. When the Accord gets redesigned, it is a big, big deal. Consistently one of the country’s best-selling cars, the Accord was due for an overhaul, and here it is. Gone are the subdued lines and stub-nosed look of the 2007 model, replaced with aggressive styling, angry headlights and an awkward grille.

The exterior might be somewhat polarizing, but inside the Accord gets a major upgrade with an almost Acura-like level of sophistication. There’s plenty of room inside, too, as the Accord gets bigger for 2008, moving up in class from midsize to full-size based on interior room. It’ll still compete with the Toyota Camry, though, for the hearts and wallets of car shoppers.

The V-6 engine comes with cylinder deactivation, meaning it runs on only three cylinders during slow travel and six cylinders at higher speeds. This keeps fuel mileage at 19/29 city/hwy for the V-6, which is one mpg better on the highway than the Camry. Safety goodies include standard electronic stability control and front-seat head restraints, along with side-impact airbags in the front and side curtain airbags for both rows.

Cars.com’s Mike Hanley recently reviewed the new Honda Accord; we’ll have the full review posted later in the day. For now, check out the photos below.

The All-New 2008 Honda Accord Coupe

2008hondaaccordcoupe

  • Competes with: Toyota Camry Solara, Nissan Altima coupe, Pontiac G6 coupe
  • Looks like: Acura, Infiniti and BMW got together and made a Honda
  • Drivetrain: 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 with five-speed automatic or six-speed manual; 190-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder and 177-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder with five-speed automatic or five-speed manual; front-wheel drive
  • Hits dealerships: Mid-September 2007

Like the new Accord sedan, the 2008 Honda Accord coupe has been radically redesigned. The new two-door features the same engine choices, with one exception: The V-6 comes equipped with a six-speed manual as an option. Surprisingly, the manual transmission gets worse gas mileage than the automatic transmission.

We’re most impressed with the interior of the new Accord, as the exterior styling, especially in coupe form, is more of a love-hate affair. There’s something off-putting about how the hood line doesn’t meet up with the grille. And that grille … that’s something only the car’s designers could love.

We’ll have a full review of the new Accord up later today, but for now, check out more photos below.

Reader Review of the Week: 2007 Honda Accord Hybrid

Consreviews_2_1

Not many people have purchased the Honda Accord Hybrid. In fact, the company recently said it has no plans to produce a hybrid version of the new 2008 model when it debuts this fall. For all those folks out there looking to buy a 2007 Accord, Ron from Pasadena, Calif., offers his take on the hybrid version he bought in February. As always, you can review your own car too, right here.

No New Honda Accord Hybrid

2007accordhybrid0605

In the early days of hybrids, there was a theory that the added power and torque from matching an electric motor to a V-6 engine would draw in customers who wanted a green car with some guts. That’s why Honda made the Accord Hybrid complete with a V-6 engine. It cost more, got slightly better mileage and was faster than a standard V-6 Accord. The problem? It didn’t sell well.

That’s most likely why Honda is not going to introduce a hybrid version of its new Accord when it goes on sale this September. There is potential for a diesel Accord in 2009, but we’re betting Honda will decide to wait on that until other new diesels from Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz test the market. Otherwise, it may repeat the same mistake it made with the Accord Hybrid.

Best-Selling Cars of 2006

Ford F150

A few readers recently asked when someone would release the list of last-year’s best-selling cars. The answer, it seems, is now. MSN Autos tracked down the top 10 best-sellers of 2006 using data from Automotive News, and there are few surprises. The Ford F-150 still tops the list, and the Chevy Silverado comes in second despite a 6.7% downturn in overall truck sales last year. The full list including total sales is below.

Honda Recalls 81,000 Accords Over Airbag Sensor

2004hondaaccord

NHTSA reports that Honda is recalling 81,000 2004 - 05 Accord sedans because of an airbag sensor that was installed improperly. The sensor regulates deployment of the airbag based on the occupant’s size and seating position and could fail, leading to injuries for smaller drivers.

Recall notices will reach owners in February, but the company says if the sensor does fail an airbag warning light will illuminate on the car’s dash. If owners see the airbag light go off, they should have their car serviced immediately. Under the recall, all owners will have the sensor wiring harness replaced. Honda says it’s received no notice of injury or incidents with the airbag deploying improperly.

The announcement comes days after 2006 recall tallies showed Honda had the fewest mechanical recalls of any automaker last year, with just more than 1,000 vehicles recalled. Toyota recalled more than 800,000 vehicles in 2006.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Honda Accord Coupe Concept

Accord1

Honda showed a glimpse of the future of one of its biggest sellers today, and that future looks pretty bright. The Accord Coupe concept is a definitive look at what the next generation of the two-and-four-door will look like. If the past is any indication — and we have no reason to believe it isn’t — Honda will closely follow the style you see here, hopefully with a revised grille. In fact, word just coming from the floor is that even Honda is now saying this is pretty much what we’re going to get when it eventually comes to market.

There wasn’t definitive talk of the engine other than there will be a more fuel-efficient V-6 under the hood with cylinder deactivation.

We could see a more finished product as soon as the Chicago or New York auto shows later this year — perhaps even a four-door version of the concept.

New Accord Coupe Concept Will Debut at Detroit Auto Show

Accord_concept

This sketch gives us a glimpse of the Accord Coupe Concept that Honda will debut at the Detroit auto show in early January. The concept will be a blueprint for the next-generation Accord coupe and sedan. Just from this teaser image we can clearly see the next Accord will have a much more aggressive design. The Accord is Honda’s best-selling model, so any redesign is extremely significant.
