2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen: First Look

Competes with: Honda CR-V, Subaru Outback, Ford C-Max Hybrid

Looks like: A more chiseled, carlike wagon

Drivetrain: 170-horsepower, 1.8-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder with five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission; 150-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel four-cylinder with six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic transmissions

Hits dealerships: Early 2015

Say goodbye to Volkswagen's Jetta SportWagen and hello to the 2015 Golf SportWagen taking the Jetta's place as one of the few dedicated station wagons competing against an entire segment of compact SUVs. The new wagon will make its North American debut at the 2014 New York International Auto Show.

More 2014 New York Auto Show News

Volkswagen's replacement sits on the new 2015 Golf platform to offer increased interior and cargo volume compared to the outgoing Jetta wagon. The Golf wagon is longer, wider and also lighter, more fuel efficient and still available in a diesel TDI version — with a new, more powerful engine — while a new turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine improves fuel economy up to 17 percent.

This wagon is definitely firing on all cylinders. Icing on the cake for the New York Auto Show is that Volkswagen is showing off a TDI wagon concept with all-wheel drive, a configuration that readers have been asking about for some time.

Bumper to bumper, the Golf SportWagen is 1.1 inches longer than the outgoing Jetta wagon and more than a half-inch wider. It also sits almost an inch lower for improved aerodynamics that combine with the longer hood and more chiseled front styling to give the wagon a more carlike look compared to the previous frumpy wagon. The Golf uses high-strength steel to reduce weight; it also optimizes components such as seats, air conditioning and electrical architecture to further reduce weight. Available features include bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

The additional exterior size helps on the inside with 10 percent more cargo room with the rear seats folded that Volkswagen says matches compact SUVs' size and versatility. The Golf wagon also gains nearly a half-inch more front and rear headroom as well as more rear leg and shoulder room than the Jetta wagon. Available interior features include a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control and parking assist.

Under the Hood

A 170-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder engine replaces the 2.5-liter five-cylinder as the base engine offering. Volkswagen claims fuel economy is boosted as much as 17 percent in highway ratings compared to the outgoing engine, which was rated up to 33 mpg on the highway with manual transmission and 30 mpg with automatic. Base engines are paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic.

The TDI diesel engine in the 2015 Golf SportWagen is a new 2.0-liter making 150 hp, up 10 hp over the existing TDI Jetta wagon with highway ratings up to 42 mpg. No torque numbers were available at this time. A six-speed manual transmission or dual-clutch automatic are the diesel's transmission choices.

Front-wheel drive is the only option at the car's launch. However, Volkswagen is bringing an all-wheel-drive concept version of the TDI-powered wagon to the New York Auto Show. If it's something you want, be sure to let VW know.

New with this model is a standard post-collision braking system that automatically engages the brakes after an initial accident to avoid potential secondary collisions.

I will order one as soon as I can IF I can get this exact configuration: 1. Diesel, 2. AWD, 3. 6spd manual. Current owner of VW Jetta Sportwagen Tdi 6spd manual.

We currently own Jetta sedan and Golf MK4. the configuration that maastrichtian described will convince us to take the plunge, Best cars ever.

I have 2010 tdi cup edition dsg, blue eshmer metallic

I'd kinda like an 8 speed DSG.

Sweet! Might have to trade in the '13 Beetle on one. Pricing info, please?

Breylan Deal-Eriksen

YES! When can I order one? And can I seriously get the 4Motion with the TDi? Because if so, I may have just died.

Yes, diesel, manual trans & AWD! What they need to compete w/ the Subaru out west though is increased ground clearance, not decreased.

Agree. I live in Colorado, and the the combo I'd like to see is 2.0 TDI, AWD and 6MT. The DSG is nice, but maintenance is costly for a small performance gain. Also, it could get expensive with TDI, DSG and AWD

One more vote for a diesel, AWD, and 6-speed manual.

...finally, a TDi awd wagon. I'll change my suv for it in a heartbeat!

Well, yes, yes and yes. it's about time. and after Wagon, diesel, manual, add one more yes for AWD! Why has it taken Audi, BMW, and everyone SO LONG to bring the Euro-Norm to us real enthusiasts?!

Close to perfect! With more clearance it would be perfect!
Thanks! When can I order one?

looking forward to ordering one as soon as possible... hopefully with 4Motion too...

I will RUN to the VW dealer with cash in hand as soon as I can buy a genuine diesel, 6 speed manual, awd wagon. It doesn't get any better! Why has it taken so long? We are so overrun with porky SUVs I want to gag.

Diesel 6 speed manual wagon? Hell yes!

rob repp

current: 2004 golf r32. eager for new options. awd would be a plus.

Been waiting on something like this for years! Just sold my 2011 A4 Avant Quattro. They only come auto and with the 2.0T. Had a GTi 4 door previously and always loved the bang for the buck I got in the VW. Looking forward to an AWD, 6spd manual diesel!

You couldn't have put this out last week BEFORE I bought a 2014 Jetta Sportwagen TDI manual on Monday?? What I really wanted was a Passat wagon, which they don't make any more in the U.S. Maybe I'll trade in the JSW next year. But for now I'm happy.

I currently own a 2009 Jettta TDI sportwagen with 90,000+ miles on it. The extra cargo space plus the diesel make this an easy choice over the Subaru Outback for my next car.

Price please

Clearance, clearance, clearance.

Current Sportwagen gets high centered after midnight on high passes, AWD won't help with that, we need some more clearance.

AWD, manual, TDI, did I mention extra clearance?

Volkswagen of America needs to bring the all wheel drive diesel sport wagon and the GTD Golf to the states. DSG, TDI and All wheel drive Americans will buy these cars up, I just test drove the new MK7 GTI and this car is amazing great job Volkswagen of America!!!
GTI Drivers edition, 2010 cup Edition and TDI wagon.

I would love to see all wheel drive one these with either drivetrain. I've wanted a sportwagen since they'e come out. The only thing to make it better would be all-wheel and/or the GTD engine. Test drove 2 but couldn't afford at the time. Since then I got a new job so that should help. Can't wait to have one of these in my driveway! My current car will be just about paid off by then or at least be able to walk away with some cash for more of a down pasyment. I love you VW.

TDI, 6sp manual, AWD!! Have been dreaming of this car...can't wait to replace sluggish, tall, un-fun to drive compact SUV.

Can't wait for a TDI all track Sportwagen. Have an 09 and a 13 waiting for the Alltrak. Love these cars.

Presently own a 1999 Subaru Outback which is a fantastic car - but am extremely disappointed with today's puffy bloated Outback, lack of manual transmission option, and mediocre mpg. I would LOVE to buy a diesel AWD 6-speed wagon. VW I feel you have a real opportunity to encroach on Subaru territory!

Build it and they (I) will come! My wife and I have gotten one every year since we met: 2009 Jetta TDI 6spd (mine), 2010 Jetta TDI DSG (wife), 2011 Jetta TDI 6spd (mine), 2013 Passat TDI DSG (wife). We traded my wife's Passat for a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. So far we love, but she did say she missed her VW......me too. TDI, 4Motion, Dual Climate Control, Panoramic Sunroof, Backup Camera......SOLD!!!

Have a 2013 TDI . Would purchase with the AWD TDI configuration

I love having the VW Golf here in the states! I have so many friends in the UK who swear by them. So so so so exciting. The instant I found out I ran to my LA volkswagen dealer and got one!

joe Bishop

When the AWD TDI 6spd wagon is here I will try to be the first in line. I have never had as much pleasure as with my current 99.5 TDI
J now with 220k miles. I looked at Q5's and 7's, Touregs, and X5's and wondered who
ever conceived these loads. Give me light and agile, 6 spds, and diesel torque and we are good to go!!!

I would buy one right now if they would offer the TDi 4Motion.

Ok everyone just calm down.
Take DEEP breaths...

I want one!
I want one!
I want one!

Gimme gimme gimme!
I want! I need!

KarlH. Schaette

Yes, I will buy this wagon if I can get the TDI with AWD.

Beezer Geezer

Bought a 2014 Golf TDI DSG w/sunroof & Nav in April. So far I love it. Last year of the Wolfsburg Golfs. Next year they'll come from down ol' Mexico way. Have to wait and see how they hold up before I'd consider one from there. Love the DSG...just keep it in Sport mode and it runs great around town.

Beezer Geezer

Oh ya! And next year TDI's will require diesel exhaust fluid.

Kelly Kaver

I was about to buy the 2015 Subaru Outback until I heard about the 2015 Golf Sportswagen. I would get the TDI. Please, please have AWD! I'm an outdoor adventure person, so also consider more clearance for driving off paved roads. And spoil me with lots of new features :) I'm excited to buy this vehicle!

An outback is a lot more car, and you don't have to hope for all wheel drive option, it comes standard. The six cylinder in the outback will walk all over this golf.

Currently own a 2013 Tdi w/ 6spd... Can not wait to upgrade to an AWD diesel manual wagon.. Perfect New England car... They will eat Subaru's lunch in NE with this car...

That's incredible, wagon tdi w/ awd and 6 speed manual !!

Please same ground clearance or lower not higher.

Richard A.

I too would in a minute order a TDI Sportwagen with AWD and 6-speed manual tranny.

I've written VoA with my desire but my prediction is that it will not be offered in the U.S. no matter how many people on various message boards say they want one.

When it gets right down to it, not many will buy a manual tranny. We're in a declining minority. Thus the continual decrease in the number of manuals offered in the U.S.

Yup, sad to see the Outback no longer offered with a manual.

Karl Haakonsen

tr6, a Subaru Outback may have many things going for it, but it is only available with a CVT now which I will not buy (I might lease a car with a CVT but I wouldn't buy). CVTs have a poor track record for long-term durability, and so far, the only repair when they fail is to replace the whole transmission for several thousand dollars.

John E

This is one of the few new car offerings I can actually get excited about. It still would not quite replace our 2001 Passat wagon, which is still the best-sized, best-configured car we have seen anywhere.

I emailed VW and received the following response...

"I can confirm that the TDI (diesel) Sportwagen will be available with a 6-speed manual option; however, there are no current plans to include the 4Motion drive feature in the U.S. models. I apologize for any disappointment this may bring you."

"I can confirm that the TDI (diesel) Sportwagen will be available with a 6-speed manual option; however, there are no current plans to include the 4Motion drive feature in the U.S. models. I apologize for any disappointment this may bring you."

Go figure! Not such a big surprise, after all. I wish they'd share with us the reason why the 4motion drive isn't planned for the US.

Janice Hylton

AWD! TDi! Wagen!
What could be better?!

truong nguyen

tdi/awd I will order one /automatic trasmittion

CT hopeful

TDI, 6 SPEED, 4 MOTION Higher ground clearance would be nice too.
Please! Please! Please!
Why should the Europeans have all the fun?

john w.

What's the ground clearance? Did it decrease? That would be a big negative, though I plan to get a manual diesel

Have the Jetta TDI, love it. Ride is a little rough, but car handles well, has excellent pickup when needed. Would LOVE AWD since we live in winter area. Steep uphill driveway from the lake means it sometimes sits in the garage in favor of he AWD Passat. Give me AWD and the mileage I get now and maybe just a little bit smoother ride and it is the perfect car for hauling my bikes and kayaks.
