The 2013 Volkswagen Passat might not be the object of one's desire for a casual fling, but Cars.com reviewer Kristin Varela says it's the one you'll want to settle down with. Redesigned for 2012 and updated for 2013, the Passat isn't the sort that gets collars steaming, but a dignified, less-showy kind you can take home to mom.

No mention of the new 1.8 liter turbo engine, which is being phased in in 2014 to replace the 2.5 liter?

I rented a Passat back in May and had low expectations for it. The exterior is so dull that it is offensive and after the Americanized Jetta, I always dismissed the latest Passat as dull and uninteresting. I was disappointed to get it for the weekend from Hertz

But my mind changed quickly; the base 2.5 was peppy, the car handled as a German sedan should, the interior was full of thoughtful touches, and the space was amazing. Since then, it has been my favorite family sedan. Absolutely surprising

Looks like VW playing Toyota. And HVAC controls come from the same bin as 2011 Corolla.

Although, I like this simple exterior. And Jetta exterior as well.
