  • Looks like: A BMW X5 electrified
  • Defining characteristics: Plug-in hybrid drivetrain
  • Ridiculous features: Exclusive "aerodynamically optimized" 21-inch light-alloy wheels
  • Chance of being mass-produced: As BMW continues to rollout electric cars, a production version of this concept is likely.

At the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany next month, BMW will unveil its latest concept car, which aims to combine the versatility and driving experience of a luxury SUV with the efficiency of a plug-in hybrid. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive is based on the next-generation X5 SUV and is the automaker's first foray into marrying its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with its hybrid electric technology.

The X5 eDrive has a twin-turbo four-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery, chargeable from any domestic power socket and good for 95 horsepower, a zero-to-60 mph time of less than 7 seconds and a top speed of 75 mph. The concept can travel up to 19 electric-only miles and gets an estimated 74.3 mpg on the European test cycle.

The BMW-developed battery is mounted in a crash-safe position underneath the cargo area, the capacity of which is only slightly reduced as a result, the automaker stated. Drivers have the choice of three modes: Intelligent Hybrid Drive, balancing sportiness and efficiency; Pure Electric; and Safe Battery mode to maintain the current battery charge.

Outside, visual accents include specially created BMW i Blue-colored kidney grille slats, air intake bars and rear-bumper inlay, contrasting the Silverflake metallic exterior paint. The concept also boasts specially designed roof rails, a connector for the charging cable that lights up during charging and 21-inch light-alloy wheels in an exclusive "aerodynamically optimized" design, BMW stated.

Top speed of 75 Mph? Not sure too many BMW drivers would look forward to that. Hopefully it's a typo.
