2014 Chevrolet SS: First Look

  • Competes with: Hyundai Genesis R-Spec, Dodge Charger SRT8, Ford Taurus SHO
  • Looks like: A proper Pontiac G8 successor
  • Drivetrain: 415-hp, 6.2-liter V-8; six-speed automatic transmission; rear-wheel drive
  • Hits dealerships: Late 2013

Chevrolet has unveiled its new top-of-the-line high-performance sedan based on the next-generation Holden VF Commodore from Australia. Shown just before the 2013 Daytona 500 NASCAR race in Florida — where it will compete on Feb. 24 — the new 2014 Chevrolet SS shares a platform with the Camaro and new Caprice police car. It will slot above the Impala in both performance and price when it goes on sale later this year. If the lines look somewhat familiar, they should — GM used to sell the last generation of this sedan through Pontiac outlets as the G8, where it was a favorite of car enthusiasts but relatively unknown among the general public.

The new rear-wheel-drive sedan will be a performance halo vehicle for the Chevrolet brand. It features the Corvette's LS3 V-8 engine: 6.2 liters of naturally aspirated muscle motor making 415 horsepower and 415 pounds-feet of torque routed through a six-speed automatic transmission. It is Chevrolet's first rear-wheel-drive performance sedan for the U.S. market since the demise of the last Impala SS in 1996.

Unlike the new Impala or the old Pontiac G8, however, the Chevy SS is going to be more expensive and focus almost entirely on performance. Standard will be a Brembo brake system, a sport suspension and forged-aluminum 19-inch wheels wrapped with Bridgestone ultra-high-performance tires. A paddle-shift system will allow drivers to select their own gears. An aluminum hood and trunk are 30% lighter than comparable steel panels and contribute to the car's near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution.

Inside, the SS will come fully equipped with standards like leather seats, a touch-screen center console with navigation and Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, a Bose nine-speaker sound system, push-button start, forward collision alert and lane departure warning, a color heads-up display on the windshield and the first application of an autonomous parking system for any Chevrolet in the U.S. Prominent SS script will be stitched into the leather interior as well.

Previously, the SS moniker (for Super Sport) was applied only to high-performance versions of existing Chevy nameplates (Camaro SS, Impala SS). This marks the first time the trim level will be used as a vehicle name by itself, and on paper at least, it seems a fitting name for what promises to be a monster.

I hope it looks better in person, especially with all the ridiculous hype leading up to it.

A lot of us Camaro owners will refuse to convert if there is lack of a manual transmission available.

Meh! I like the styling on the new Impala better... Manual stick would have been awesome...

look...it's the new Caddy Catera....

uh, this is going to be a "halo" vehicle? I smell another bailout coming.

What are you talking about? They are importing this from Australia where it will be built. Most of these cars are sold as Holdens, they are just going to send a few thousand to the US as Chevy SS models. Its a smart move, it allows them to make more use of capacity in Australia and it give American consumers an alternative to the Chrysler sedans.

Chevy's gold badge is tired looking and needs to go as it looks awful on this car.

sheth: My point is not about how much money it will or won't cost them, it's about the thinking that this would be a halo vehicle for them. It's no more a halo vehicle than the SHO is for Ford (which it's not). I think it speaks to Chevy remaining out of touch with what the market is looking for. I do agree with your point that it is an alternative to the other out of touch auto maker (Chrysler).

Chevrolet has a proper halo vehicle: Corvette.

i dont care what they call it or what you think they called it, the car looks good and they will have no trouble selling 10k a year or whatever. In terms of sedans, this is a halo vehicle for chevy. The corvette is the ultimate halo vehicle. criticizing a car because of what you think the brand believes the car represents is kind of stupid honestly. I don't get the connection between this being a halo and GM needing a bailout.

Chrysler had biggest sales increase of any non Japanese major brand in the US market. They are out of touch? Sounds like you are.

This is chevy's answer to the Chrysler 300 and other high performance rear drive sedans in the market. It will be more fun to drive than any of GM's front drive sedans and it will find a ready market in the warm weather states where they don't have to worry about driving in snow. It will probably poach some BMW 5 series sales because of better reliability and lower price for service.

I hope the next gen Holden Commodore will be wider than the last one. The Pontiac G8 was nice, but I thought it was too narrow compared to the 300C and Charger. The interior had better step it up as well, given that Chrysler's interior are much improved.

looks nice. I wish Chev would import more cars to the UK apart from rebadged rubbish from Daewoo

I don't know why they didnt show the interior pics on this site but chevy released a few, its much better looking than the G8 inside and at least as nice as the LX sedans. There are a lot more than 2 official pics of this car- can't understand why they aren't here.

Mr. Skinner

The 94-96 Impala SS was one of the best vehicles Chevy ever came up with. They still have a loyal following 17 years after production ceased. Hopefully, this vehicle will stir the same excitement.
Unfortunately, I can't picture a similar "Lord Vader Your Car Is Ready: advertisement for this one.

This cars looks so plain vanilla that in the photos the headlights had to be turned on to give it some sparkle.

its a holden, they are conservative with styling in australia. The good news is that visibility should be decent compared to GM's other large cars which tend to have small greenhouses and big pillars.

Looks wise this car is very nice. I would love to see this come to the UK but not sure the market is there.

If you’re looking for a used car, odds are you know how important it is to get a good vehicle history report. The services dig deep into your potential buy’s dark past to root out any skeletons you should be aware of.

Thanks for the Post! I love the new Impala, but the engine really makes this car an attractive option. Up until now I have only been interested in sports cars, but due to an expanding family I need to adjust my priorities, and this car seems to be the best of both worlds. Does anyone know of a good South New Jersey Chevy dealership?

This car is a Commodore SSV here in Oz and exceptional value for money as a high performance family sedan. The VF model here as Chevrolet SA is a BIG step forward in cabin quality and overall appointments. Aussies love this car. Grunt, style, comfort, handling, its all there. Enjoy!

Pontiac fan
