  • Competes with: Audi A4 Avant, Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon
  • Looks like: BMW is still filling out the 3 Series lineup
  • Drivetrain: 240-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (328i); 300-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder (335i)
  • Hits dealerships: Summer 2013

BMW is expanding its 3 Series line yet again: On the heels of unveiling the 3 Series wagon at the Detroit auto show, the automaker plans to unveil a Gran Turismo version at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Styling matches that of the slow-selling 5 Series Gran Turismo model, with a coupelike profile, sloping roofline and broad tailgate. It also has four doors with frameless windows and an active rear spoiler that deploys from the roof to improve aerodynamics — a BMW first. Also new to the brand is a power tailgate activated with a foot swipe under the rear bumper, similar to Ford's system.

The GT seats four passengers, and they sit 2.3 inches higher than in the sedan. Compared with the new wagon, the GT is 7.9 inches longer and 3 inches taller. It'll also offer an extra cubic foot of cargo space (18.3 cubic feet total) and a backseat that folds in a 40/20/40 split. There's also LED strips to illuminate the cargo area.

Mirroring the rest of the 3 Series lineup, the GT will be available in 328i and 335i models and in standard, Sport Line, Luxury Line, Modern Line and M Sport trims. Engines are also familiar: Powering 328i models is the 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and 335i uses the 300-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder. An eight-speed automatic is standard. No word yet on manual transmission availability.

The 2014 3 Series GT will go on sale in the U.S. this summer. Check back with us for pricing details.

This would compete more with the Audi A5/S5 sportback in Europe than the A4 Avant. The 3 Series Touring wagon would compete with the A4 Avant there.

Jay

Looks like a winner only with the Sports package. Don't think they will sell a lot of them with the X1 and X3 in the cards.

Ben

It looks like a modern Volkswagen Dasher

Rockaby

The headlight design--that's how the 3 series sedan should have looked!

Rob

Agreed on the headlight and grill design here - looks MUCH better than the sedan.

The noses on these GTs (5-series, and now 3-series) are just beautiful. But "coupe-like profile"? More like "Aztek-like profile". These things are hideous! She's got a pretty face, but... that's about it.
