With styling that mirrors the BMW X3, the all-new BMW X1 should look familiar. It's significantly smaller, however.

The profile shows off how low the X1 sits to the ground — like a sedan — as well as its long nose and tall SUV-style roof.

Our test X1 was an M Sport performance version, featuring more aggressive front styling, 18-inch M wheels, a sport suspension, sport seats and a sport steering wheel.

An X1 with rear-wheel drive is called sDrive, while the 28 designates the four-cylinder engine. All-wheel-drive models are xDrive and six-cylinders are 35. The X1 is available in sDrive28i, xDrive28i and xDrive35i trims.

Being BMW's least-expensive model doesn't mean lacking the automaker's expected luxury, or at least not too much. The X1 has classic BMW styling and only a few noticeable signs that it's the manufacturer's baby SUV.

With a car-like ride height comes car-like ease of entry into the front seats, which in the M Sport trim level are supportive. The X1's generous legroom is appreciated, given the X1's overall size gives the impression it could be snug in there.

Rear passengers aren't going to be as comfortable as those in front. The snug rear seat is the most apparent indication that the X1 is a subcompact SUV.

Like the rear seats, the X1's cargo area is narrow and tall, and fairly small in overall volume. The X1's 14.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up is tiny compared with the 27.6 cubic feet in the X3.
