2014 Mazda6 Gets Diesel Engine For U.S.
We've been covering the 2014 Mazda6 sedan for some time before its official introduction at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show, but we're still learning about the all-new sedan.

Mazda will now be the second automaker to put a diesel engine into a mainstream midsize sedan, after the VW Passat.
The 2014 Mazda6 goes on sale in January 2013 with a gasoline-powered 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Sometime in the second half of 2013, the Mazda6 SkyActiv-D will hit dealers. The twin-turbo 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine has no official specs in terms of power or fuel efficiency, but it will be slated above the 2.5-liter. There has been no official confirmation that a V-6 option is coming, either.
Both engines will team to a regenerative braking system Mazda calls i-ELOOP. Unlike systems in many hybrid cars, this one doesn’t require a separate battery or electric motor. The system saves weight, which is crucial for improved gas mileage.
We'll have to wait even longer to find out mileage figures for both engines.

Diesel prices around me are at least .50 more per gal. than regular unleaded which is about 15%. I would love to try diesel but what's up with that huge difference in price? I realize the diesel would still probably save money but would it be worth the drawbacks like availability, smell, oily fill ups, slow warm up(for heater in winter. Plus, does Mazda have the techs to repair these engines in the U.S.? Love Mazda but some questions in my mind.
Mazda really needs to drop a more powerful engine in their as in the previous generation with the 3.7 V6. If they neglect that market they'll lose the zoom-zoom feeling.

Can't speak for diesel in GA but in Ontario I've been paying less for diesel than for gas. I've never had a problem finding fuel, today's diesel fuel does not smell and fill ups are as neat as with gas. I wouldn't know if the fuel is oily as I don't spill the stuff. The VW TDI engine I have is wonderful. Starts well in winter, delivers lots of cabin heat on those cold February mornings and the seats have warming coils to take the edge off the cold while waiting for the engine to warm. I get better than 60 mpg (Imp.) cruising on country roads. The Mazda diesel sounds like a move in the right direction to this diesel owner. The VW TDI may have some serious competition.
When Mazda releases the dual turbo diesel in Front Wheel Drive (FWD) they will lose all interest in that diesel. The zoom zoom feeling will be even more gone because it will have too much tq. I drive a Mazdaspeed 3 thats slightly modified and i have over 300tq easily and im at 6000 ft elevation. Mazda needs to make this car All Wheel Drive to keep the sport look in it. 6 speed manual, dual turbo diesel, and All Wheel Drive will make this car a useful amazing vehicle for everyone. Especially Northern states that dont want to buy a Subaru.
The diesel of today are very different than the one we had in yesterday years. Techology is making diesel a great choise for anyone who wants more MPG from a full tank. AWD twin turbo diesel Madza 3 hach, I would buy 5. One for each of my family members.
