Recall Alert: 2009-2010 Ram 1500, Dodge Dakota
Chrysler is recalling 44,300 Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks from the 2009 and 2010 model years because the rear axle could lock up, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In the affected vehicles, which were built between July 1, 2009, and Nov. 30, 2009, the rear axle pinion nut may loosen because it lacks adhesive. If that happens, the axle may lock up, and the driver could suddenly lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Chrysler will start notifying owners next month, and dealers will install a pinion nut retainer for free. Owners can call Chrysler at 800-247-9753 or NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 for more info.

Not to be super nitpicky or anything, but that's the picture of a PowerWagon, which I believe is based the 2500 series pickup. PowerWagon owners might be confused if they're not familiar with the series their trucks are based on.
Hi Ken, thanks for pointing that out! I've replaced the photo.
I had this happen to my 2010 at 55,000 ish miles. was running 70mph, let off gas. rear end made some noise then locked up tight. heck of a thing having a full sized crew cab truck kick sideways in rush hour traffic. Slide to the right then was coming back around to the left, when it finally exploded, letting the tires roll. I coasted to the side of the road. They had my truck for quite awhile, replaced housing bearings, ring and pinion, carrier etc, basically all but the axels. Love my truck, but I'm still very Leary of it may happen again. Hard to trust, luckily I have a good amount of driving experience and kept it from splattering me and all the people around me.
In case you are wondering the pinion nut fell off and let the pinion fall into the rear end. it locked up then blew the bottom of the housing out. Another fun fact this also allows the drive shaft to drop. It was also replaced with a new one.
This happened to me last night it made a weird noise the back end locked up and the axel/drive cam fell off and oil/lube spilled everywhere luckily a mechanic reattached and my daughters and I drove it home anyone know how we are suppose to get it fixed? I am absolutely terrified my 2010 dodge truck I use to love Dodge and this was my first NEW dodge Truck now im terrified to drive it. I once only wanted dodge vehicles and this experience has made me so weary especially since my children were in the truck and will I have to have a lot of work done since it dropped the axle/drive cam? help someone
