Recall Alert: 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV

Mitsubishi is recalling 261 model-year 2012 i-MiEV electric cars for an airbag fault that could deactivate the frontal and side airbag system. The problem is caused by an incompatibility between the airbag sensors and self-diagnostic software that will trigger a Supplemental Restraint System warning light to alert drivers if the fault has occurred.

The airbags may not deploy in a crash as a result of the incompatibility. The affected vehicles were manufactured from Nov. 4 to Dec. 22, 2011. Mitsubishi will notify owners, though a notification schedule hasn’t been provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Dealerships will replace the incorrect airbag sensors with new, compatible sensors free of charge.

Owners can call Mitsubishi for additional information at 800-222-0037 or NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
