2013 Buick Verano Turbo: First Look

  • Competes with: Acura ILX, Volvo S60
  • Looks like: A Verano with a "T" badge for turbo
  • Drivetrain: 250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
  • Hits dealerships: Late 2012

Today, Buick revealed the details of its Verano Turbo model, which will follow in its sibling Regal's footsteps by using a version of its turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. It makes 250 horsepower in this application, up from the Regal’s 220-hp rating.

The 2013 Verano Turbo joins a 180-hp four-cylinder engine. Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available. According to Buick, the Verano Turbo will do zero to 60 mph in an estimated 6.2 seconds. Distinguishing it from the regular model is a turbo badge in back, a rear deck lid spoiler and dual exhaust ports. Inside, there's aluminum sport pedals.

Fuel-economy numbers aren't final, but Buick expects the Verano Turbo's EPA figures to be in line with the brand's other turbocharged models. The Regal turbo is EPA rated at 18/29 mpg city/highway. Non-turbocharged Veranos get 21/32 mpg.

Buick says pricing will be announced closer to the start of production in late 2012.

The Regal GS makes 270 HP not 220. The engine in the CXL makes 220.

Turbocharged non-GS models make 220-hp. GS models have 270 hp. The 2.4-liter in the base model is rated at 182-hp.

Um, how can it compete with the Volvo S40 when the Volvo S40 ended production for 2011?

Jennifer Geiger, Editor at Cars.com

Correction: S60.

Gli is a competitor as well. Very similar car.

The Verano a competitor to the GLI!? Never.

This gussied up Cruze is awfully heavy - it's only 50lbs lighter than a Hyundai Azera. President Obama made a big mistake getting rid of Pontiac.

If they flatten out the Buick bubble grille it would look great. Make a station wagon and I'll forgive the grille design and buy one.
