NHTSA Investigates GM, Toyota Vehicles for Door Fires

Some 309,000 GM vehicles and 830,000 Toyota vehicles are under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for driver's side door fires, according to MSNBC.

Certain model-year 2007 Toyota Camrys and RAV4s seem to be at risk of developing door fires that originate from the power window master switch, according to NHTSA's filing. Six consumers have complained about the issue on those Toyota models already, says NHTSA.

NHTSA is also investigating the same issue in certain GM vehicles. It could affect 309,000 2006-07 Chevrolet Trailblazers, said the agency. NHTSA has received 12 complaints of smoke or fires from TrailBlazers. None of the TrailBlazers were destroyed by the small fires, said NHTSA, but some door parts melted and seats were singed, according to GM.

The Buick Rainer, Saab 9-7X and the GMC Envoy — all based off the TrailBlazer — are not a part of the investigation. None of the three models have been recalled yet, according to the agency.

NHTSA is investigating whether the window switches on the GM and Toyota vehicles were made by the same supplier.
