More Chevy Cruze Diesel Details Emerge
For 2013, Chevrolet will add a diesel powertrain to its already-popular Chevy Cruze compact sedan.
Today we confirmed with GM Powertrain spokesman Tom Read that the diesel engine will have a 2.0-liter displacement and be turbocharged. In Europe, the Cruze already has a turbocharged 2.0-liter VCDi diesel inline-four that makes 161 horsepower and 266 pounds-feet of torque. This could very well be the engine that ends up in the U.S. model, but with some modifications.
The U.S. version of the motor is currently undergoing rigorous testing in Michigan, Italy and Germany, GM said in a press release. The automaker wants to make sure the engine can operate under a wide range of conditions — including extreme temperatures between minus 40 degrees and 158 degrees. The engine will have direct injection and a particulate-capturing filtration system to reduce emissions, GM says.
The carmaker says the motor will offer outstanding fuel efficiency, torque figures and a quiet ride. GM hasn't publicly commented on whether the diesel will eke out better fuel-efficiency figures than the Cruze Eco, which gets 42 mpg on the highway.

Certainly would be great for Chevy to offer this version in the USA. And maybe this would be followed with a Chevy compact pick up truck with the same engine.
The idea of a diesel is a great step in the right direction! But for an even more efficient car, I'd still like to see an electric hybrid version, but w diesel instead of gasoline. Also why no 2dr? Way too many dull 4dr sedans for those of us who drive alone 90% of the time. The only way I can get a 2dr is w the Camaro or Corvette, and that's not happening. The Cobalt was available in 2dr form and it was a pretty nice car.
Now that bmw`s 3 series diesel has failed in the states, chevy can pick up some of those buyers. Maybe VW will rebadge the cruze diesel and sell it as a vw like they did with the chysler minivan they call the routan. A cruze diesel would the best vw ever.
@2 DOOR FAN
I FEEL YOUR PAIN, I ALSO WANT A 2DR DIESEL AND VW IS THE ONLY ONE THAT OFFERS IT!
SO LOOKS LIKE ILL BE BUYING A GOLF 2DR GOLF!
I've driven this car in Italy, it was the only engine offered in the hi-line (LS) Cruze, w/ 6 sp. manual. It is AWESOME - quiet, huge midrange power even on autostrada (83 mph speedlimit) at high speed, and if they don't dumb it down with lowered power and automatic only, I'm finally going to replace my 25y/o Mercedes diesel. It was that good.
