Movers and Losers: March 2011

March was a record sales month for many automakers. They saw vehicles of every type fly off lots. This month’s Movers include a wide variety of body styles from hybrid hatchbacks to minivans to large SUVs to a rare convertible.

The average time it took to sell a car increased slightly to 48 days from February’s 47. That’s a good sign of a healthy car market.

The Losers list looks familiar, and we found some good luxury and economy buys in our own picks. It’s odd to see a once white-hot car like the Volkswagen CC cooling down just a year or so after it debuted.

About the Lists
The Movers and Losers list reports the average number of days it takes to sell models from the day they arrive on the lot until the final paperwork is signed by a buyer. This is not a days-of-inventory list like you may find on other websites. We're now focusing on only 2011 and 2012 model years.

For Movers, we only list vehicles that pass a certain threshold of sales in order to weed out limited editions, ultra-high-performance cars and others that might skew the numbers or otherwise inaccurately portray popularity. For Losers, we have removed any threshold to reflect 2011 models that may have the greatest incentives.

And how about all those retards saying the 2011 Lexus CT 200h wouldn't sell.


I'm interested in taking the CT for a test-drive and the primary reason why I would find it useful is it's a hatchback. I would probably side towards the A3 TDI or Jetta TDI Sportwagen, but having another choice is always a plus.

The Lexus model that I still think is a flop is the HS. It's awkward looks and a general step back from the Prius (utility and economy) make it less desirable. I think the HS sales numbers reflect that.


I have a Jetta TDI, trust me you don't want one. I've had problem after problem after problem. At two years old it's more problematic than the seven year old Accord I traded in. How I wish I could undo that deal.

The reason that the 2011 CC is on the lots so long is that the 2012 are already selling. With a slightly revised interior, I would by a 2012 over a 2011.


Good to see that the Lexus CT 200H is selling good. I just purchased the "last" one in my local lexus dealer 4 days ago :) It's a very good compact car, it's not a drag racer(duh its a hybrid!) but it has a lot of pep and have very good handling. Plus I am consistently getting 42 MPG mix city and HW! driving! Tota
