2012 Hyundai Accent to Debut at New York Auto Show

Hyundai Accent

We're busy covering the Chicago Auto Show today, but Hyundai is already looking ahead to the New York Auto Show, where it says its redesigned Accent subcompact car will debut.

The 2012 Accent will be available in sedan and hatchback form when it hits dealerships in late spring. On the sidelines of Hyundai's Chicago press conference announcing the launch of the Genesis 5.0 R-Spec sedan, Hyundai Motor America President and CEO John Krafcik revealed that the new Accent will get 30/40 mpg city/highway whether you choose a manual or automatic transmission. That's a significant fuel economy increase compared with the outgoing Accent which got, at best, 36 mpg on the highway.

We'll have more Accent news this spring when it debuts.

You must be referring to the U.S. debut. I thought it made it's North American debut at the Montreal Auto Show last month. The 5 door hatchback looks nice.

Given that the Elantra, which probably weighs several hundred pounds more and most likely will sport a larger engine, gets 29/40, I wouldn't call 30/40mpg that impressive. I was expecting something more like 33/42...

Danny

Actually the accent engine may be the same as the elantra. The only major advantage is the weight. I'd have expected more like 31/41 or so.

Hako

The Accent has a 1.6 with 138 hp, so not the Elantra engine, but the one in the Veloster. It also shares the six-speed auto or manual with the Veloster. Hyundai says it will make "at least" 40 mpg.....so don't nit pick the numbers yet.

This actually looks like the Hyundai i40 which is soon to be officially revealed in Europe. But I must say - !i like"

Hyundai are teasing their way into the European D-segment market under the radar. This looks pretty cool and I can see it giving the Mondeo a run for its money especially if it is priced right. Recently stumble on this youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwqKy07OhXI) about the reveal. Apparently, users can connect through Facebook to directly participate in the live light reveal. You can create your own personal light reveal via a live video feed. The official site for the launch is http://www.hyundai-i40.eu/
Really looking forward to seeing this at the Geneva Motor Show.By the way great site. Very informative

I heard 50MPG highway

Max Reid

Excellent.

Read the specs, hatch will have more space than sedan and seems now a days, more people are buying hatches and thats why every model is available in sedan and hatch version.

Fiesta, Focus, Sonic, Versa and so on.

Re Jim's comment about seeing 50 mpg rating for hwy -- I saw that also, but it was regarding the Canadian introduction and a conversion from KM/gallon; it therefore probably referred to the larger Imperial Gallon used in Canada.

Hyundai is very consistent in giving us stunning products that will captivate each one of its style and quality.
