2012 Acura TL: Up Close

When I got my first glimpse of the 2012 TL at the auto show rollout, I knew Acura was confident it had fixed the styling that Acura’s vice president of sales, Jeff Conrad, acknowledged “may have been a bit too bold in the evolving market.” How did I know? Because the 2012 was charcoal gray, and dark colors always brought out the worst in the 2009-2011 TL. (The cars featured in TL commercials are typically silver to mitigate the bright silver grille, to which American buyers have objected.)

Sure enough, Acura reduced the shield grille to a sliver of its former self and added a horizontal crease in the bumper that makes the silver segment seem smaller still. Around back, Acura removed the chrome-under-glass look of the taillights and shaved some mass out of the bumper below them.

Explaining the difference in terms of what Acura changed doesn’t express how much better the car looks overall. We’ve been impressed with the car’s interior and how it drives, especially with the Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive. Now it has the styling that should help it succeed in the market.

Still not attractive.

Your mom's not atractive.

Acura listened to customer styling concerns. How could anyone find fault in that?

thanks acura for ducking up the front end i liked the old one it was simple, and the knew one looks just busy glad the preserved the rear.

I think Acura did a very impressive job with the redesign and would now add it to my car shopping list. The TL AWD is a nice alternative to Audi.

Looks marginally better. Not much different though. Front end is still awkward and the a4 and cystic still look better. At the end of the day all that matters is whether or not thus looks better than the competition. Answer is "no".

If you thought Jimmy Durante looked good with that "beak" on his face then you will still probably like this - uuuuugh!

too many scars upfront...

No Hybrid? No 2 Door?

The Acura designer did an excellent job on the restyle. I was afraid they'd go in the direction of General Motors and go bland w/ the styling.

This is one of the best touch-ups I've seen in years. It's enough to make the car look sleek and attractive. I really like the look especially in the dark colors.

I own a 2008 Acura TL & love the style. Was not too impressed with the 2009 style but I really like the 2012 changes especially the front end (has a RL look almost). I contacted my Acura dealer & they said the cars should be arriving mid to late March.

It took me about 2 years, but I was finally warming up to the 09 TL's design. At first I was totally against it, and it turned on me ever so gradually. Now the car just seems boring. I also see that they got rid of the EXCESSIVE amounts of wood trim on the lower dash with boring, cheap looking plastic.

If I were to choose a car, I would rather pick the one with complete gadget. I must assert that I'm a man who can't live without that stuff.
