Ch-Ch-Changes: 2011 Honda Insight
To better compete against the Toyota Prius, Honda has added more standard safety and content features as well as a new entry-level Insight hybrid for the 2011 model year.
The new entry-level trim will be called “Insight” when it goes on sale Wednesday; the LX and EX trims are still available. The model will be priced at $18,200, excluding a $750 destination fee. That’s $1,600 less than the 2010 Insight, making it the most affordable hybrid currently on the market.
The new entry-level trim comes with air conditioning; automatic climate control; power windows, locks and side mirrors; remote keyless entry; tilt/telescoping steering wheel and a basic CD player with two speakers and auxiliary jack.
All 2011 Insights now come with electronic stability control standard; it was only available on the EX trim last year.
The LX trim adds cruise control, a USB input, center armrest storage, security system and floormats to its standard features list.
The EX trim now has steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, which was exclusive to the EX with Navigation trim last year. Besides that, the EX remains unchanged, with alloy wheels, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals.
The 2011 Honda Insight is rated at 40/43/41 mpg city/highway/combined, which is 9 mpg less than the Prius’ combined city/highway mileage of 50 mpg, but with $4,600 now separating the two models, the Insight might be a more attractive purchase for some.

This ("Insight") is an excellent price for a commuter vehicle. For once, a car company has done the right thing - no need for fancy stereo systems, special alloy wheels, etc.
I don't think that it's gonna hurt sales of Prius too much due to the 9 mpg difference, but it will definitely hurt the Civic, Camry, Altima, Fusion, and worst of all, the Cruze. Heck it may even create damages to the regular Civics, Corolla, Sentra, Elantra, etc. at such a low price!
I thought it was a new mini minivan from Honda.
This car can compete in gas mileage and perhaps reliability, but it's uglier than a Pontiac Aztec.
I meant to say, Volt, and not Cruze, in my previous comment. But I'll add that it will also hurt Elantra, Focus, Cruze, etc. too.
Bowrider,
I have suspicion that you forgot how Aztec looked like.
My problem with this Insight is its uncomfort. I mean, there are small and comfortable cars. This one is not.
I don't see this changing current sales or impacting the sales of other vehicles. It's a good vehicle ... just came about at the wrong time. If it had been introduced at the same time the Prius came out then it would be a different story.
if you're gonna put down the Aztek at least spell it right! My friend rented an Insight & it reminded him of his 1996 Hyundai Accent.
did they change the display for all the info(gas mileage, odometer, etc.)? cuz it was pretty ugly and dated.
who would buy ugly car like this even if honda reduces its price!!to get 40mpg ford fiesta would be lot better choice than ugly insight.
@ mike,
Not only Fiesta is a much smaller car, it's only 40mpg HWY. Insight is 40+ mpg CITY/HWY.
No matter how hard you are going to try, assuming that you do own a Fiesta, you'll never be able to match the mileage of an Insight (under identical driving behavior).
I must applaud Honda for offering a reasonably priced Insight. This is a major nail in the clean diesel coffin - a VW TDI is thousands more than this Insight. This also means Toyota must be getting ready to introduce a Yaris based hybrid at a sub Prius price. We're starting to see economies of scale lowering the price of getting into the hybrid club.
I looked at the Insight when I bought my 2010 Prius. A Prius II does not cost much more than an Insight when you look at all the incentives Toyota has been offering due to the floormat fiasco, but is MUCH more car - and even gets substantially better mileage.
@Amuro Ray
still its ugly car compare to fiesta and thousands cheaper than insight if you know math!!!
Running away from a losing argument is fine, Mike, but please, be a gentleman!
Ur argument is based on the mpg, not price, mike.
As far as price goes, it's $3000 cheaper all right, but you are buying a smaller class vehicle, so IF YOU KNOW anything 'bou comparison, u don't compare apple to oranges. The closest non-hybrid offering from Ford will be the Focus (2012+), which is around same price but worse MPG than the Insight.
Besides, how it looks is subjective. Most people think that Aztek's ugly - and I do too on its production form - but try that with those who think otherwise.
His argument is based on the ugly stick which is not a losing argument.
It's not an argument at all on how it looks.
@Amuro Ray
but bottom line is "ugly cars don't sell" no matter who makes it , how good makes it....it just doesn't sell....
Since the car is a real beauty, and handles and brakes like a honda, nearly a sports car, with a great price, it should sell well.
I'm getting 48+ mpg at 65 mph on the highway.
I've owned a 2011 Insight for about 6 months. They offered .9% for 60 months. 18,900 with delivery no Prius is anywhere near that. As far as mileage comparisons go understand this car actually teaches you how to drive it to get the best mileage. At current time from new I have averaged 48.3 mpg. No fiesta or other naturally aspirated car will do that. The car is not terribly bad looking and several peaople have made compliments about its looks. If you dont own one or have never driven one for any significant amount of time shut up and let people who actually know about this car make the comments.
I am a 19yr old young man i have recently purchased this car. With a right body kit and some subs i can get a bunch of hoes and still be saving gas.....LOL xAZN PRIDEx
