Toyota Considers Lexus Recall Over Stalling Engines

Lexus
Another day, another major issue for Toyota. The embattled automaker may issue a recall for nearly 270,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles worldwide over stalling engines.

The issue stems from the valve springs in Toyota’s 4.6-liter V-8 and 3.6 3.5-liter V-6 engines that can cause idling problems. This could cause the engine to stall while the vehicle is moving. According to Japanese officials, there haven’t been any accidents linked to the stalling engines.

According to a Toyota spokeswoman, the models affected by this engine problem include:

  • Lexus GS 350
  • Lexus GS 450h
  • Lexus GS 460
  • Lexus IS 350
  • Lexus LS 460
  • Lexus LS 600h
  • Toyota Crown, which is sold in Japan and Asia

Of the 270,000 vehicles with the affected engines, 90,000 were sold in Japan.

At the moment a U.S. recall is tentative, but an official recall in Japan will begin on Monday. According to Reuters, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn’t been made aware of any new Lexus recalls.

Update: Lexus has officially announced that 137,000 vehicles in America are affected by this issue. The U.S. models affected include the Lexus IS 350, Lexus GS 350, Lexus GS 460, Lexus GS 450h, Lexus LS 460 and Lexus LS 600hL.

Toyota Considering Another Recall; Engines May Stall (Reuters)

I know your source was Reuters (who have it wrong themselves) but it's the 3.5.

This is why I can't believe that Toyota is STILL the BEST SELLING CAR IN AMERICA?!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? After all the problems that these cars have, they should be kicked to the curb. My personal opinion is that if you STILL drive a Toyota, you are dumber than a bag of hammers.
NEWS FLASH: These cars are NOT safe. Toyota needs to pull there head out of there ASS before somebody gets hurt while driving one of these death traps.

Ford owner,

I'm personally not the biggest fan of Toyota, but that's a bit extreme.

Plus, a lot of people like to go for the "save" (re: vanilla) choice when it comes to cars, something that nowadays, fewer and fewer people have an interest in.

To the majority of people, soft & cushy + a name that is (perceived to be, whether it's true or not remains to be seen after the past few months) built on reliability.

It's just like how the public's perception of Hyundai and Kia still resides in the mid-90s. You mention you bought a new Kia Forte or Hyundai Sonata and the majority of people think you just bought yourself a s***box.

People are stubborn.

Remember,Toyota is STILL Toyota...
as Mr Easy keeps reminding everyone.

That means they have always been crappy...
Its just that people didnt know it,or it wasnt made public knowledge like nowadays..

How come the ES350 and RX350 are not included? It has the same engine as the GS350. As for the older Toyotas and Lexus ( before 2004), I think they are safe. They consistently rank high in reliability and don't remember the last time they were in recalls.

This would never happen with a General Motors vehicle.

Seriously?

That would never happen with a General Motors vehicle. Right. Should I remind you guys of the 5.3L & 4.8L valve stems that were being installed from the factory with damage and causing insane amounts of oil consumption? Ref TSB# 07-06-01-007F If you want to be a car guy on a car blog then do your homework.

Tony

This will hardly do any damage to Toyota because their most popular engines are 4cyl ones

Al

Chrysler must be glad. They're now looking GOOD compared with Toyota.
Serves Toyota right. After truly building the best cars in the world, they became greedy and arrogant. They sacrificed quality, ignored their customers and thought that they could sell on reputation alone.
The crankshaft has come home to roost.

Mikey

I guess people don't know the difference between the statements 'may cause problems' and 'will cause problems'.

he is not a real poster. He is an anti GM poster that is pretending to be someone else. I can't believe you're taking him seriously.

Just like the other recalls didn't do any damage to their rep. They have had mediocre sales results all year except for when they first launched 0% financing.

When you become #1 you no longer have the option of ducking and dodging the glare is on you. I personally always hated the clatter sound of values lifting that I hear on high milleage Toyotas.

Is Toyota building engines in China like General Motors does? I had two Chevy's were the engines seized with less than sixty thousand miles of use. My dealer said it was because the engines were built in China to save money.

First they accelerated uncontrollably, now their engines fail? Since they counteract each other, can't they just cancel both recalls? ha...

thomas:

an engine is built the same way regardless of where its built. All major manufacturers build the same engine in more than one country. The only GM engine that was built in China was the 3.4L in the old Equinox. Labor is cheaper there but the engine was the same as similar engines built in NA.

This Lexus engine problem is very real. I had a 2011 RX350 and my engine would stall when accelerating from a stop. It may sound weird but it seemed to occur more when I turned left from a stop sign or stop light.I took the car to Mcgrath Lexus in Westmont Illinois several times and all I heard was that they couldn't duplicate the problem. In frustration I traded the RX350 for a GS350(2014) and my GS does the exact same thing. I have narrowly missed a very bad wreck because of this stall problem.I am at a loss what to do.

John

2008 rx350. had a loud humming noise and braking problem with our rx350. Huge delay accelarating from a stop. stalls on hills only. but takes forever to go from a stop. Got the bearings replaced and brakes replaced but the car still hesitates. Just today we got rear ended when the car failed to go. got hit, car stalled, could not stop because of traffic. steering wheel went dead. very scary. lexus must fix this. not good.
