Recall Alert: 2010 Subaru Legacy, Outback

The popular, redesigned Subaru Legacy sedan and Outback wagon have been included in another recall. This time, 73,698 vehicles built between Feb. 16, 2009, and April 12, 2010, are being addressed due to a fault on the wiring system in the steering column.

Possible defects could lead to malfunctioning front airbags, paddle shifters, cruise control, horn control and radio controls. You can find out if your car is included in the recall by checking the driver-side doorjamb, where a sticker lists the date of assembly.

Subaru said it would begin contacting owners this month. Owners can contact Subaru at 800-782-2783 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236.

See,even the mighty "Subie" isnt immune from recalls...

this is what a customers don't like and this really puts a bad impression in a market......it's good that you are recalling the vehicles but they should have done it earlier....... why don't they take all checks done at manufacturing plant????? recalling vehicle involves an extra cost and definitely more losses........

Here is another one for Subbie. Not recall yet but something to consider.
Coworker just got Legacy with manual. Engine stalls periodically when he shifts into neutral. Dealer said, this is not the first one. So must be a bug. But where is the recall?

Love..and bad wiring. It's what makes a Subaru. LOL

I also have a stalling issue when depressing the clutch to down-shift on my manual transmission 2010 Legacy. It's only happened twice since I've owned it (6 months), but it's scary to lose power steering while you're going 30.

I also have a manual shift 2010 Outback and have had the car stall when putting the clutch in to shift gears. It is intermitent but has happened 4-5 times over the past three months. If you look at the tach when this happens you will see it dip down to 600-700 rpm and then stall.
I talked to the local Subura dealer where I bought the car and they have never heard of this.

My 2010 Sub manual outback stalls when the rpms go down to 500...usually when downshifting or coming to a stop. I've complained and now the dealer says that Subaru has come out with a software update. Hubbie found this on the internet:

Service Bulletin # 11-96-10
Pages: 1

Bulletin Description: This is to announce that ECM reprogramming files are now available to address RPM dropping below idle speed when the clutch pedal is depressed while the engine is warming up.

Good luck!

P. S.

I'm taking my outback to the dealer on Monday. will let you know what happens. My dealer had not heard of the problem but had my file flagged to keep the issue alive. Also check out this subaru forum:

I had the following Warranty Recall performed on my 2010 Outback (reprogram ECM to improve A/F sensor and emission performance ECM software update to improve emissions when the car is operated in cold weather and the engine turned off and restarted within short periods of time. The A/F (air flow, O2) sensor contains a heating element which is controlled by the ECM, which assists the sensor in reaching optimum temperature.
There could be a longer than desired delay turning on the A/F heating element resulting in higher emissions.) Since having this update, which is supposed to improve fuel efficiency, my Outback has gone from 30 mpg to 26 mpg. I have heard from several other owners they have experienced the same drop. The dealer can do nothing about it since it sounds like it was mandated through the EPA. I bought the Outback becasue it did get 30 mpg. Since the dealer can do nothing about it I'm looking at going back to Toyota. $5-$8 per tank of gas adds up after a while.
