Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: May 2010

2010civic
While the stock market continues its roller coaster ride, the automotive market seems to be stabilizing. May saw continued sales gains for nearly every automaker over a dismal May 2009.

Domestic automakers saw particularly strong sales, with Chrysler up 33%, Ford up 23% and GM’s four remaining brands up 32% with the company overall up 17% when including dead brands Pontiac, Hummer and Saturn and the sold-off Saab.

Hyundai and Kia continued impressive sales, and the Hyundai Sonata remains in our top 10 list, joined by the Chevy Malibu and Ford Fusion in trying to topple the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. See which cars came out on top below. And if you want to follow our breaking sales coverage every month, follow us on Twitter @kickingtires.

If you add the GMC Sierra, the Silverado outsells the F-series by quite a bit

JM -No they don't. Check the article on total pickup sales YTD. Not even close when added together. Ford still wins!

Eli

What are the sales number for ford , Toyota and chevy???

Who buys the F Series and Silverado to make up so many truck sales. It cant just be an average American.

So does this mean that Honda and Toyota tops the sales chart for small and mid/full size sedans for May? It seems that Toyota has weathered the bad publicity storm quite successfully (well at least for the month of May 2010). Just goes to show that buyers still perceive Toyota's overall quality and reliability as among the best.

Steven

I can't help but laugh at the Chevy commercial that says the Malibu is a better car than the Toyota Camry and ends with 'May The Best Car Win'. Based on sales the best car clearly is the Toyota Camry.

Gov't Motors

Malibu IS the best car amongst rental companies.

K

A better car without a rear center armrest. Even my compact car has it.

Based on sales the F150 is the best vehicle in the US market. I doubt you agree with that but that's how ridiculous it is to use sales as the only barometer of what represents "the best". In the 80s the Cutlass was the best selling car for a few years. Do you think that means it was the best car sold in America? The camry outsells the E class of 3 series by a huge margin- doesn't mean its a better car. That's just common sense. The Camry is cheap (especially with record incentives), it has a strong brand image and its backed by millions in ad spending. Of course it sells in huge volumes.

JR:

Toyota had the worst sales increase of any major automaker last month. Chevy outsold all of TOyota's brands combined. Ford did as well. It was a lackluster month for Toyota because they have pulled ahead lots of sales.

The sonata outsold the altima and Malibu in retail sales even though it came in 5th place overall. Guess that means lots of altimas are fleet sales.

Though it's not reflected in this list, hybrid sales are on a tear, with nearly 15,000 Priuses sold last month. Even the slow selling VW diesels managed over 6,000 sales. There's a report out forecasting an average price for gas of $4.13 in 2013.

I don't ever see the Malibu topping the Accord or Camry, but maybe the Fusion could do it. Where would the Malibu be without the fleet/rental sales? The Malibu needs a redo NOW.
