Cars.com Reviews the 2010 Volkswagen Golf
We’ve already reviewed the clean-diesel Volkswagen Golf TDI, but now Cars.com senior editor Joe Wiesenfelder takes a look at the 2010 Volkswagen Golf with a standard gas engine. The Golf continues to be one of the best small cars on the market, Wiesenfelder says, but now that larger sedans like the Hyundai Sonata are offering better mileage at a low entry price, does the Golf have a new kind of competitor that make its selling points a bit less attractive?

"A minor complaint is that the engine sounds gravelly."
That's putting it nicely. It sounds like it belongs in a farm implement.
The Mark IV Golf and Jetta just had plastic trim the same color as the rest of the interior. Wood trim was optional. I don't know why manufacturers keep putting this silver painted stuff in--it looks tacky. I'd rather have the plain, trim the same color as the rest of the dash.
The problem with VW is that in 10 years it will feel like a car that went through a lot. Corollas have that same trait.
But Civic or Mazda3, if not destroyed, may feel like new.
I agree about the trim. I received my "Shark Blue" Golf TDI today. The silver painted stuff really looks out of place with my choice of exterior color. I am thinking of replacing it with a wood trim if it's available for my model.
Sonata? OK if you like that kind of thing. Civic? Noisy, slow piece of tin. Mazda3? Nice to drive, but h/b looks garish and the cargo hold is too short in height to be practical. Stick with the Golf.
