Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: February 2010

HondaCivic
How badly did Toyota’s recalls impact its sales? Badly, but the 8.7% decline was less than what even conservative industry analysts predicted as Toyota’s big sellers still sold.

Nearly every other automaker saw sharp sales increases, and Chrysler remained flat, selling a few hundred more vehicles than it did last February. Ford was the big winner, shooting up 43%. GM was up 11.5%, but that included its four defunct brands. The four remaining brands saw sales increase 32%.

Nissan sales were up 29.4%, and Honda was up 12.2%. Subaru and Kia had record-setting February sales, up 38% and up 9%, respectively. Luxury automakers also did well, with Audi, BMW and Mercedes all seeing sales increases of 33.6%, 13.7% and 8.4%, respectively.

How did the top 10 cars list shake out? Believe it or not, the Toyota Corolla and Camry both moved up. The Corolla moved from No. 5 to No. 4, and the Camry moved from No. 7 to No. 5. The Honda Accord, though, took the No. 2 spot from the Chevy Silverado.  The Ford Fusion and Honda Civic also made gains at the expense of the Nissan Altima and Chevy Malibu. The full list is below.

1. Ford F-Series: 32,895
2. Honda Accord: 22,456 (including 2,432 Crosstours)
3. Chevy Silverado: 19,822
4. Toyota Corolla: 16,996
5. Toyota Camry: 16,552
6. Honda Civic: 16,471
7. Ford Fusion: 16,459
8. Nissan Altima: 16,198
9. Ford Escape: 15,156
10. Chevy Malibu: 15,150

Pretty much the same top ten month after month. They just move around a bit and some disappear and reappear again...yawn. Surpised to see the F series pounding the heck out of the Silverado. May the best truck win.

Tim

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Toyota also offer 0% financing for 60 months on the Camry and Corolla? If so, I'll bet that helped sales.

Maxwell

It's interesting that, with all the bad publicity and recalls, Corolla outsold Civic.

Allen

Holy Toledo the Camry still out sold the Malibu! How can that be w/ Toyota having it's problems and Chevy offering higher incentives?

Sanish

@ Tim

For March, Toyota is offering better deals:

Starting today, through April 5, 2010, the national marketing program includes financing, leasing and customer loyalty offers. Highlights of the program include:
0% APR financing for up to 60 months on 2010 Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, RAV4, Tundra and Yaris, for qualifying buyers.

Low lease rates on 2010 Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, Prius, RAV4, Tundra and Venza, for qualifying buyers. Examples include a Corolla lease for $179 a month and a Camry lease for $199 a month, although offers may vary regionally.

Complimentary two-year premium maintenance program for customers who purchase or lease a new vehicle and provide proof of a Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicle already registered in household, with applicable conditions.

Sanish is right, we'll have a post on Toyota's new deals. Of course that's going forward. Not in Feb when these sales #s are from.

"Surpised to see the F series pounding the heck out of the Silverado. May the best truck win."

Include the identical GMC Sierra and GM comes out on top.

Happymantis

Despite the bad publicity, I think most people still trust Toyota more than other manufacturers, the brake issue, albeit very serious, can be fixed after a visit to the service shop. Not to mention, the 60 month 0% financing deal probably helped out quite a bit.

TOr,
Nope, include Sierra and Silverado and its still less than F-Series. See our other post on how Ford outsold GM this month.

ody

honda the best company ever no american garbage car can compite with it

J

Maxwell,

The difference is 444 units. Keep in mind that Toyota factor in Matrix sales into Corolla.

Tor

Hmmm...you're right. Wow. Typically the Sierra+Silverado outsell the F-150 (yet the Ford gets all the glory).

The Matrix is a Corolla Hatch in Europe so including it seems fair.

Zack

It's surprising to see the Escape in the top ten. It's pretty long in the tooth and rides rough.

YOING

GM better start dumping a few more Rentabus into the fleet market or it's going to drop off the top ten list!

YOING

BTW, GM fleet sales rose 115% last month!

Government Motors baby!

dee

Nice to see Toyota still outsell its main competitors even through all the bad scrutinizing its recieving through the media outlets and etc... way to go TOYOTA.

PS: As a pervious 2007 Camry owner and now 2010 owner I will be staying loyal to Toyota.

Calvin

I've moved on from Chevy to Toyota as I could never get over how little resale value my last two Chevy's brought. When I sold my first Corolla it had so many interested buyers I sold it the same day I listed it on Cars.com.

J

Tor,

So just because they sell it in Europe as the same model, that means it should be counted together in US?

So, maybe we need to start counting the JDM lineup soon?

Fleet sales are high for both GM and Ford. But I try to look at it like this: if fleet sales are up that means American businesses are spending money.

It can be seen as a good sign for the economy. It could also be some fleets swapping from Toyotas to other companies, like rental car companies that had to bench a lot of cars in their fleets during the recall process.

samppy

the camry's are being bought by taxi drivers and businesses. getting rid of the g. guzzler crown vic.

samppy

if you are a taxi driver, them deals are hard to pass up.. and when i want a taxi i want to ride in a camry..i hate them hand me down police cars.

To David Thomas: I am a Ford man and the claim by Chevy fans that the F-Series out sold the Sierra and Silverado because of fleet sales is stupid. If the product wasn't great they wouldn't keep buying the Fords they would buy Chevys but Ford trucks has outsold everybody for 33 years in a row. Why quality and price. And by the way if we are going to add the Sierra and Silverado together let's be fair what about the adding the numbers for the Lincoln truck with the F-Series?

Among all given list Toyota cars are the best and really affordable for business family.

I am happy to see my Honda Accord on second number. Actually Accord is intended for the executive luxury market is a good choice of aftermarket parts for those who want to adapt their Honda Accord. Type R models are very good mechanical quality, and a challenge to improve air intake or exhaust system and more efficient. All other models to benefit from high quality stainless steel sports exhaust, sports cat and cold air induction kit. Gas flows through the head is also recommended.
