Insure.com Finds the Most and Least Expensive Cars to Insure
Prepare to pay up for insurance if you just bought a 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera GT2. With a national average of $2,943.78 for a 40-year-old male, it’s the most expensive car to insure in the 2010 model year, according to Insure.com.
The insurance site’s annual ranking of average car insurance premiums found that the 911 Carrera GT2 was followed by the Mercedes S65 AMG, Dodge Viper SRT10 coupe, Porsche Panamera Turbo and Viper SRT10 convertible.
While the profile of the average person who drives the car, including accident history, has much to do with premiums, certain characteristics about the vehicle can influence the cost as well. Small cars tend to be driven by younger, inexperienced drivers, and rates often rise with horsepower.
The five least expensive cars to insure were the two-wheel-drive Mazda Tribute ($1,070), Honda Odyssey LX ($1,095), four-wheel-drive Mazda Tribute ($1,103), Chrysler Town & Country LX ($1,119) and Jeep Wrangler ($1,124). However, the Porsche GT2 is $194,000. The Mazda Tribute starts at $20,405. At 10 times the MSRP, three times the cost for insurance doesn’t seem so bad.
Insure.com arrived at these rankings through a commissioned study by Quadrant Information Services, which calculated premiums for a 40-year-old male driver. It used car insurance rates from six major carriers in 10 ZIP codes in each state.

Interesting! My 'dream' car since I've been a kid has been a Porsche 911. Though not on my immediate goals list...this article was a bit surprising. Guess I didn't realize it was quite so high!
One that I DID find surprising was the Jeep Wrangler. I know two people in my home town who own them and if I were insuring them - the way they drive them and terrain where they drive them - I'd put them up there in the top 5 most expensive to insure vehicles!
That the mini van was comparatively inexpensive on the list is, I guess, not surprising (though I still be refuse the idea!).
Anyway, it will only be a few short more years before my oldest son turns sixteen. I'll definitely keep the Mazdas in mind!
