Ford Unveils Taurus Police Interceptor

Fordpolice1
Ford just unveiled its replacement for the aging Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, which has been a law enforcement staple for decades. Taking the Crown Vic’s place in your rearview mirror will be what we know as the 2010 Ford Taurus — a particularly awesome version of the Taurus in police spec, if you ask us.

Police departments across the country won’t be piloting just any Taurus off dealership lots. Ford says approximately 90 percent of the interior has been redesigned for police use. Some features you won’t find in a regular Taurus that your local police department will have include:
  • Anti-stab plates built into the front seatbacks
  • Column-mounted gear selector
  • Heavy-duty brakes
  • Heavy-duty alternator
  • Larger radiator and purpose-built cooling system
  • Vented wheels for brake system cooling
  • Back door hinges that open an additional 10 degrees
  • Vinyl rear seats
Like the Taurus you currently see on the road, the interceptor version will feature a 263-hp V-6 engine or a high-output 365-hp, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 with all-wheel drive.

You can expect to see the Taurus Interceptor patrolling the streets in late 2011 when Crown Victoria production is scheduled to end.

Bitchin'.

Or at least better than the Crown Vics.

Zack

This will be more expensive than the crown vics, at a time when city budgets are really hurting. I was shocked to see a $47,000 sticker on a Taurus SHO at the auto show, so it will be interesting to see what they charge the police for essentially the same car.

Skinner

The Dodge copcar looked pretty interesting when it came out a year or two ago - have many departments bought it?

I believe an article written in Dec here said ~ 70% of Police vehicles in US are Ford. "Higher Cost" but of coarse sticker maybe higher but aren't most new cars year to year? This new one running the new ECOboost should have a payback as it'll be cheaper on gas over current one don't forget. Consider many hrs idling. PLUS I'm sure much safer than current with an interior designed just for police. Usually depts are asked for input.

SG

I like this, but I do believe the Chevy Lumina PPV will be a better all around vehicle. but this will deffinately give it a run for its money.

JM

WANT! too bad its fleet only

Shorebreak

Many departments will go with the Dodge Charger because it's rear wheel drive and cheaper than the new Taurus. I'll see what the Texas DPS and California CHP opts to go with. That will determine the future of the Taurus for police use.

SG

Shorebreak,

You have to remember, Chevrolet is going to bring the Lumina as a Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV) for use in Police Fleets only next year also. The Lumina is also RWD and can be quite powerful.

As I recall reading the new GM police car will be built in Australia. Some may want to stick with buying US made cars. As far as Dodge goes, we'll see if that whole company lives long enough as recent reports say Dodge/Chrysler total sales down 44% and wonder how long they can survive like that while Ford /GM are up, Ford 43%. BTW New Ford PI car is will be built in US this time. We'll have to see who's is most reliable as well as fuel efficient with gas rising. Maynot be the biggest HP but most cost effective. Ford has own this market for quit some time.

Looks like a Camry cop car. FWD police cars are mainly used in metro areas. The Chargers and Crown Vics are the highway patrol's choice...for now.

Happymantis

I guess these will be ultimate indicator how reliably EcoBoost can work in tough situations.

Peppy

I know where I live (Suburb of Columbus Ohio), we have at least 3 Dodge Charger patrolling the streets. Still a lot more Crown Vics but man, those Chargers look mean with all the police goodies.

william

i have seen 2010 sho run 12.7 in quarter mile, that is roughly 4.5 seconds to 0 to 60, not much will outrun the ecoboost car

TSSmith

Why does this remind me of something from Robocop?

Kirk Weese

The last time we discontinued the Crown Vic, government motors had us for lunch along with @ 75% of the public safety market. Having come out of that market, I hope we don't loose that market again.

TSSmith said "Why does this remind me of something from Robocop?" Good point.
With many cities installing more and more traffic cameras around, where getting closer to "Robocop Future" anyway.

Bonk

"Back door hinges that open an additional 10 degrees"
Hmm i wonder why LOL

Zack

JM, just wait a couple years and you can buy one at the police car auction for a ridiculously low price.

Allistar

you know how the old saying goes" if it ain't broke, why fix it"? i understand that ford is planning to end production for the crown vic, but other that one reason, why swap cars? is the vic not fast or does it not handle like one? im sorry give me a 1962 galaxie with the 406 big block as a cop car, and again, there wont be many cars outrunning me.

Glenn H

Darn Ford! Don't do it! Leave the police work to that POS Dodge Charger! The new Taurus is more deserving than that.

reader

why can't the doors open wider on the regular Taurus?

skinner

Probably to keep your kids from dinging the car next to you.

Joseph

We need all those super fast 365hp police cars to catch up with all these bad guy's driveing porshes, maybe they won't need the helicopter any more.

mcg202

omg i freaking love this i hope i will be driving one of theses by then
