2011 Ford Mustang GT: 412 hp, 26 mpg
Ford has done it again. Today, the company released mileage figures for the upcoming 2011 Mustang GT with its new 5.0-liter engine. Not only does it have 87 more horsepower, it will get better mileage, too, up to 17/26 mpg city/highway for the six-speed manual from last year’s 16/24.
If you move to the automatic, the highway figure drops, but the city mileage goes up, to 18/25 mpg.
These numbers also best the Chevy Camaro’s mileage of 16/24 mpg, but the Camaro also puts out more horsepower, 426 hp with its six-speed manual. The Camaro is also 250 pounds heavier.

Actually, with today's technology, getting better mileage with a more powerful engine is "relatively" not a difficult thg. Think of it another way - the "old" engines were built or designed in a very fuel inefficient manner, most likely due to cost and the attitude of "who cares" when gas $ was very cheap.
D.T., if you can (or any magazines / car blogs can) find out HOW this mileage can be achieved, that will be excellent. In fact, there should be a rule that requires manufacturers to state how a customer can achieve those mileage #s!
P.S. Despite this better mileage, I wonder how many Mustang driver can really achieve those figures...in fact, those who said they can shouldn't have purchased this vehicle in the 1st place ;)
AR,
I'm working on a post now about the Equinox and mileage. It's not hard to achieve good mileage but you have to know how you're driving style and scenarios impact overall mileage.
Unfortunately when we test cars, because we have to see how the perform at the limits, mileage suffers.
Nice bump but looks alone sold me on the Mustang over the Mulletmobile.
As a happy owner of a Terrain I can attest that the mileage just does not seam obtainable in real world driving. No matter how efficient I drive I can't break 19mpg in city and 27mpg on highway. I have a 4 cyl fwd SLE and the dealer service has been great but they say the car is within specs. All things considered the mileage is good but not as advertised.
Where Ford and Chevy get their gas mileage estimates is a mystery to everyone but Ford and Chevy. Maybe downhill with a strong tailwind. Lets wait and see what the EPA or Consumer Reports has to say. Other than that, ooh lord, 400+ h.p. in a stock pony car! Makes me feel like its 1970 all over again.
i dont think that GM realizes that it should just get rid of pushrod engines all together...modern DOHC engines are more powerful per liter and more efficient because of it.

These are EPA numbers. The previous numbers which were lower were Ford's early estimates.
I've driven cars of every brand out there and always gotten better than the EPA mileage, even the pre-2008 numbers. I'm not sure what it is that people are doing that eats so much gas.
I now get between 20%-25% better mileage than the modern EPA figures. Keep the tires inflated, use decent gas, set the cruise on the highway, don't run the A/C when you don't need it, and that's about it.
Not too difficult to achieve decent MPG's . I drive a 2010 Mazda CX-9 and I am averaging 20.0 mpg in both city and highway. And believe it or not, the car moves when you need it too. I still want that Mustang GT so bad!!! :)
