2009 Pontiac Vibe Added to Toyota Recall

UPDATE: Both the 2009 and 2010 Pontiac Vibes have been included in the accelerator recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has added the 2009 Pontiac Vibe to a recall notice associated with Toyota’s recall of 2.3 million vehicles, which was announced yesterday. Like the Toyotas, the Vibe is being recalled for a faulty accelerator pedal that can wear and eventually become stuck, leading to unintended acceleration.

Toyota has not yet offered a fix for the problem. We will update this site as soon as we learn more about when a solution can be expected. For now, owners are being told to bring their cars in only if they’ve already experienced issues with the gas pedals.

The specific number of Vibes recalled was not released, but it includes all Vibes from the 2009 model year.

Always a costly affair for manufacturers. We only hope they don't make an Audi 5000 type 60minutes program out of it.

i am sorry. if i were to have a vibe, i am not waiting to have an issue.

Are you sure that the NHTSA included Vibes in the recall? There is no information about it on their Web site.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 09V392000 N/A
NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
Potential Number of Units Affected: 10119
Summary:
GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 PONTIAC VIBE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 1.8L ENGINE AND ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALASKA, COLORADO, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, IOWA, KANSAS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MONTANA, NEBRASKA, NEVADA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, NORTH DAKOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WHEN DRIVING UNDER CERTAIN UNIQUE CONDITIONS IN EXTREMELY LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD SUCTION PORT FOR THE BRAKE VACUUM CAN BECOME LOCKED DUE TO THE FREEZING OF CONDENSATION RESULTING FROM POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION.
Consequence:
THIS COULD LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCE AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE BRAKE VACUUM LINE FREE OF CHARGE. A SPECIAL ADVISORY LETTER WILL BE SENT TO OWNERS OF VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE OCTOBER 23, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 10V018000 N/A
NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: POWER TRAIN:CLUTCH ASSEMBLY:PEDAL/LINKAGE
Potential Number of Units Affected: N/A
Summary:
GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 PONTIAC VIBE. DUE TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FRICTION LEVER INTERACTS WITH THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSIDE THE PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE LEVER MAY BECOME SMOOTH DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. IN THIS CONDITION, IF CONDENSATION OCCURS ON THE SURFACE, AS MAY OCCUR FROM HEATER OPERATION (WITHOUT A/C) WHEN THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS COLD, THE FRICTION WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS OPERATED MAY INCREASE, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMING HARDER TO DEPRESS, SLOWER TO RETURN, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION.
Consequence:
THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY BECOME HARD TO DEPRESS, SLOW TO RETURN TO IDLE, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy:
GENERAL MOTORS HAS NOT YET PROVIDED A REMEDY PLAN OR AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

jane

i have a 2007 vibe and have encounter this.

I am currently driving a Pontiac Vibe rented from Enterprise while my own car is undergoing repairs. Enterprise just called me to ask me to bring the car back in and replace it with a new one, out of an abundance of caution, which speaks well of them if this is just a partial recall.

Mike

Funny how Pontiac is added to the government mandated Toyota recall but there is no GM recall.

They don't call it Government Motors for nothing

Amanda

The Vibe was added because it is toyota everything with a pontiac name.... does anyone know if the 06 is having any problems??

Linda

I have an '06 Vibe. I've had 2 "surges". The first was so short I wasn't sure it even happened. The second was almost a rear-end accident. Took it to a dealer that time and was told "no codes showed". Maybe a problem longer that thought. Oh yeah- only 22,000 miles on.

JLR

The Pontiac Vibe is a rebadge of the Toyota Matrix, which itself is largely built upon the Camry platform. Hence why this particular GM product is involved.

When I bought my 2009 vibe there was no mention by the dealer that Toyota built it for G.M. but now with this major recall they are fast to point out out that it is a Toyota.

Hmm, why isn't this making constant news? Oh wait - it's a GM product.

Nancy

I bought a 2005 Vibe last year. Didn't dwell terribly on it til news of the recall, but have had three maybe four very quick "surge" events while in slow-idle traffic that caused me to stomp the brake in panic. Last time it happened, I pulled off to stop and look and realized the little floor mat was shoved up close to the pedal. Figured that was the problem and threw it in the trunk, never to return. Also, the brake pedal and accelerator ARE un-nvervingly close together, and if you're a bigfoot like me, you have to be VERY conscious of your feet. So, I'm forging ahead with a car that I otherwise think has been a pretty good little value for commuting and toting things around, hoping that I've pegged the problem. Since the recall only covers the recent Vibes, I'm hoping that the particular make/model of the gas pedal unit that's running amok wasn't used in 05. Gulp - we'll see.

The Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix were a joint venture by both General Motors and Toyota and many of their parts were created in the same facility
