Ford Tops J.D. Power's Nav System Survey

Ford hit a homerun on the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates’ navigation system survey by collecting five of the top 10 spots, including first and second place.

The Lincoln MKS won the top award with a nearly identical system to that of the Ford Flex, which came in second place. The F-150 came in fourth, the Escape in seventh and the Edge received eighth place.

Jason Johnson, Ford user interface design engineer, told Autoblog that he saw this as a victory not just for Ford’s innovative Sync system with Sirius Travel Link, which includes 3-D maps, a digital jukebox, customizable home screens and much more, but also the interface.

“This system is easy to use. It’s intuitive. The buttons are where you’d expect them to be, the grouping is logical and the graphics are bright and easy to read,” he said.

The survey was based on responses from 16,939 owners who recently leased or bought a 2009 model-year vehicle with a factory-installed nav system.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Toyota might have some catching up to do: The Japanese automaker collected seven of the bottom 10 nav systems, with the Avalon’s system finishing in last place.
