2011 Chevy Cruze at 2009 L.A. Auto Show

2011ChevyCruze

  • Competes with: Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla
  • Looks like: A stylish compact with a Chevy logo
  • Drivetrain: 136-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder or 138-hp, turbo 1.4-liter four-cylinder with six-speed manual or automatic transmission
  • Hits dealerships: Fall 2010

Chevy announced its new Cruze compact car nearly a year ago, and it’s been on sale overseas for months now. We’re getting the first official specs and equipment information from GM on the U.S. version, which will go on sale in the third quarter of next year.

The most interesting tidbit is the choice of engines. The base LS model will come with a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder teamed to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The more significant powertrain is a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder in the uplevel LT and LTZ trim levels. It’ll put out 138 horsepower and 146 pounds-feet of torque; when equipped with a special fuel-efficiency package, it should achieve 40 mpg on the highway.

Details on the efficiency package haven’t been released yet, but we’d guess it would include low-rolling-resistance tires.

GM is also touting other specs — namely that the Cruze will best the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic in overall passenger volume and luggage volume, which it does. Its 15 cubic feet of trunk space also nudges out the new Kia Forte. It also bests the competitors in rear legroom. In most other dimensions, the Cruze is on par with the rest of the class.

Standard features on all models include 10 airbags, stability control, six-speaker stereo with MP3 jack. Optional USB and iPod integration is available in an upgraded sound system. Bluetooth, leather interior, heated seats and navigation will also be offered.

We’ll learn more about the Cruze’s fuel mileage and pricing later this week at the L.A. Auto Show.

Is that leather on the dash?

Wow.

H,
Thanks for the catch. Still have turkey hangover I guess.

interior is worlds beyond the Cobalts. I think GM will keep Cobalt around for a lil while as a cheaper alternative 2 this car...& probably as a rental fleet car as well. The rear reminds me of the Euro Civic hybrid.

adam

The taillights look like they are melting. Otherwise, not bad

J

It also beats the Corolla and Civic in terms of depreciation too.

Looks nice

The Cruze looks like a respectable compact from Motors Liquidation Company, The New GM.

Does anyone have MSRP estimates?

RE MSRP,
I would guess like the Equinox it'll stay close to the Cobalt's pricing sans rebates of course. Around $15 to start and more for the turbo of course.

Nic

Get a good look at this LTZ trim because all you are going to see on the road is the base LS from a rental fleet.

Erik

freakin bad ass, this is definatly going to be a corrolla/civic killer, with that Turbo 1.4 I bet it scoots!

Sam

I think GM might have a winner here... if it beats Honda in quality and resell value.

J

The 1.4 has less horsepower than the Civic. Only beats it by torque.
Not only that, the Si runs circle around it even it is a 5 year old model for crying out loud. GM, too sad and too late.

H

Why don't you go drive one when it comes out and then decide whether it's a good or bad car instead of coming on here and yakking about depreciation and engine stats and a sport model that is supposed to run circles around the plebeian models.

The interior design is just fantastic. I wonder how much it costs?

J

H,

Why don't you go back to the GM's building to work in your cubicle before claiming it beats a model that is 5 year old!

H

What's your point? You certainly missed mine.

Very nice car ! I guess the European version will be weaker !

He turned out very serious! Good work!

Everybody see the new commerical?
I love this..

Very nice car my favourite is the dashboard.Excellent!

Details on the efficiency package haven’t been released yet, but we’d guess it would include low-rolling-resistance tires.

Very nice car. The interior has pleasing color compositions. The center console to hit well. Nice one. It should have a bigger wheel, and with complete consistency.

Very nice car. I love this brand. Many people say that just is not true. Why do they say?

The Chevrolet Cruze is already out in Europe and Asia but has "undergone refinement" for the U.S. market, GM said. It will go on sale in late 2010 here. The new car is significant for GM as being on the leading edge of cars with small-displacement turbo engines designed for a blend of fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive qualities, the company said.

From November 27-29, GM will park a Volt at the Westfield Century City shopping mall in Los Angeles ahead of the L.A. auto show's December 4 opening to the public. As part of the interest-building exercise, GM will give free tickets to the auto show to visitors on a first-come, first-serve basis.
