Toyota FT-86 Sports Car Concept

FTCONCEPT
  • Looks like: A stubby sports car with big-boy aspirations
  • Defining characteristics: Low-hung hood
  • Ridiculous features: Audio controls embedded in dash fabric
  • Chance of being mass-produced: Very likely
What you see here is the marriage of Toyota design and Subaru engine technology. This is the joint Toyota/Subaru compact sports car we’ve heard so much about for the past year. Still in concept form here, the production version might be further along than you think. Toyota hopes this is the dose of fun its car lineup needs, and from the looks of it, it might be.

The poorly named FT-86 — feel free to submit your own name ideas below — is only 163 inches long, nearly a foot shorter than the Scion tC and a few inches longer than a Hyundai Accent. The engine is a Subaru 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder, which allows for a low placement in the engine bay; that’s why the profile looks a little funky. It’s also rear-wheel drive. This could be one nimble little car that also promises to be lightweight.

The overall design is aggressive, but we wonder what the price will be for such a performance-oriented small car. If it encroaches on the new Genesis coupe’s $20,000-plus price tag, it might be a hard sell for American shoppers. Otherwise, we give a thumbs up to anything that would liven up the Toyota brand. Naturally aspirated = fail

Good to see toyota's not gonna risk their reputation for reliability enough to tempt me into buying one ;)

Stephen

Looks better than some of the early conceptual drawings. I would definitely be interested if Subaru's version has AWD.

gabriel

This is going to be a banging car. The only thing that I wish it had was the option to have a turbo. Keep it right side drive it is something different. Can't wait till it comes out I will get one for sure.

Matt C

It looks like a redesigned celica. Don't think I would buy, but it looks nifty.

cody-mac

i see 350z in the front end, a little civic body line, a little gtr 35 roof line. oddly enough, a tiny bit of prius in that back side. I like it.

Dan

Weak attempt. Nothing really stands out in the styling, and I'd hardly call it a sports car. I guess I'd just call it a coupe. I'd take it over a Corolla any day, but I'm not impressed.

Zach

It looks like the new hyundai genesis and a nissan 370Z and some other mixes but mainly a hyundai.

Martin

Not impressed. Uninspired exterior. 2L 4cyl, hardly a sports car. Definitely a scion on steroid.
Based on its size and performance, this thing do not compete against 370z or genesis coupe. Albeit RWD, more likely against civic si, eclipse or the upcoming tiburon-replacement (not genesis).

Even though the design and everything isn't real great to begin with, after it comes out of concept phase and into mass-production phase it's going to be so watered down it's not even funny.

Oh, and it's going to feel like you're driving on marshmallows. Like usual.

LP

The Celica's replacement? ehh... maybe maybe not

To me it does nothin for me. The exterior is ok, but not good. The inteior looks better than the exterior, although its the concept verion, it's bound to change a little bit somehow. I need to see the production version to determine my final opinion.

I see RX8 in the profile. If they added half-doors for the back seat it would be a dead ringer. Engine mounted low and back in the chassis, only a boxer or rotary are compact enough to do that. Probably really hard to service, though. Toyota needs to keep the price under $20k and they'd have no other competition. Closest match might be a 4 cylinder Eclipse, but it's an old design.

Nick

1.Meanest looking headlights.
2.interior looks like a space ship
3.The part that connects the roof to the hood could have been red also.

J

Where did it say it is naturally aspirated?
The only 2.0L that I know Subaru makes is the EJ20.

ermatthe

The design says New Supra but the engine says New Paseo.

and1

will it be turbocharged.

J

Dave T,
I finally understand why is it called FT-86.

If we look a little back into Toyota's history, we would know why.
Remember there was a time that we had a RWD Corolla GT-S?
Its chassis code is AE86.
In Japan, it is either called Corolla Levin or Sprinter Trueno.
So, the FT could mean Futuristic Trueno, and the 86 is you guessed it, from AE86.

Nice looking car. Looks fast. Let's hope Toyota supercharges or turbos that engine. and this car could be a pocket rocket. Let's hope that the radio contols in the fabric is the first thing left on the editing floor.

@J: You are on to something. I'm with you on the name of this concept

Nic

Drop the ISF engine in and make it rear wheel drive and i'll buy it.

Andrew

It's a BMW X6 from behind...

I'm surprised that it actually looks decent though.

Does anybody on here know anything about cars. "1.Meanest looking headlights.
2.interior looks like a space ship
3.The part that connects the roof to the hood could have been red also.

Posted by: Nick | Oct 6, 2009 5:11:31 PM " Its called A-pillar. If a IS-F engine was dropped in it, the car would hardly sell due to its cost.

I own an 2001 Solara and when they changed the style i hated it, so i counted the days until this car came. I was glad to pay off my car finally, but would happily go into debt again for this car. I only hope they put in a 6 cylinder

Shanes live

toyota doesnt take any chances do they, why use a subaru motor when they could easily use that wonderful tunda v-8 or even one of lexus v-6. I understand a light nimble sports car. but its really simple miata handeling, 5.7 v-8 and a price under 30K ,mix in a little modern jag styling with 1965 ferrari 250 gto and you have a instant category killer. put me on that 2 year backorder now!

Better leave room under the hood for a few turbos, dump the 6 speed for a ultra close 5 and a true limited slip.Traction control is ok if it can be completley turned off.real drivers get sideways!

my Toyota tundra is great for getting stuck due to traction control preventing fun/wheel spin.

I serioulsy wonder if anyone who has left a negitive comment has any idea of this cars purpose is? For those who don't know this is the new version of the AE86 aka "hachi-roku" GTS. which was a FR corolla that has become a legend in motor sports. The AE86 is know for rally and track performance. It is a pure sports car to the letter and is made to be light around 2000lbs and with it n/a 10000 rpm red lie in the 20v 4age motor fast as hell. This car is regarded by many as a drivers car and has had a huge resurgence in popularity in the canyon running "touge" seen. This car is built o start a new legend of the FR corolla for the 21ist century. Its is everything it need to be and when produced will most likely be the new standard for performance for price.

God Toyota sure has lost its balls!…Im not even sure if they even know what a sports car is these days…Toyota needs to start building the cars they had in the 1980s!!! LIKE IT OR NOT RETRO DESIGNED CARS ARE HERE TO STAY! SO MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE THEY DID THEN!!! IF THEY SOLD WELL AND PUT YOU ON THE MAP THEN THE SAME IS STILL TRUE!!! if you make a retro supra or celica {flip lights included} ILL BUY 3 OF THEM! You can even use THE SAME BODY you had back then! A 1970 BOSS 302 Mustang doesnt go out of style! NEITHER DOES A 1985 MKII SUPRA P-TYPE!!!!!!!!!!! just look at this one! http://www.malibyte.net/Supra/85supra.html

Mike

Hopefully this will be a Celica or Supra...The front looks a lot like the Lexus supercar to be built. I think it looks good. A twin turbo engine would be a nice addition as well.

Toyota FT-86 Sports Car Concept is the coolest car ever. The design is unique. This is the car of the future.

Why are people who post on these blogs always so ignorant?

This car is going to be turbo and it is RWD. Yes, it's only a 2.0L turbo, but you know what else is a 2.0L turbo and completely destroys many "faster" cars on the track? The Evolution.

This car may not be what some of you want, but some of you are asking too much. A big V8 in a lightweight sports car with all the safety standards required today and a nice interior for under $25k? Ridiculous, impossible, will not happen. If you want that, buy an old RX-7 and swap a LS1/LS2 in it.

If they keep this under $25k, it will be a great entry level sports car. YES it is a sports car, by every traditional sense of the word. Two doors, FR layout, good power:weight ratio.

Mike

Maybe this could be a next-gen TC or is Celica coming back?

Death

Reminds me of the supra.

The concept car looks great. I hope that the compatible toyota parts would fit into the whole system of the concept!

Mr T

Celica GT4 comes back with this. should be 4whl drive 270hp with turbo i hear. basic is 2whl drive with 200hp non-turbo.
