Next Nissan Compact Coming to U.S.

Nissanmicrasketch
In a press conference today in Japan, Nissan revealed plans for its next generation of microcars. The bulk of the specifics revolved around a new version of the Nissan Micra (above), a very small three-cylinder car that will be sold globally in emerging markets. China and India look to be two of the countries where Nissan hopes to lure people to their brand with a tiny, affordable car.

However, the company also said that it will use the same platform for a vehicle in North America. To us, it sounds like we won’t get the Micra, but it’ll likely be similar so Nissan can compete on size with the Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Accent. Nissan’s current Versa compact is actually quite a bit larger than either of those vehicles, despite having a sub-$10,000 version.

Production of the new cars won’t start overseas until next year. We likely won’t see them until 2011. Perhaps Nissan will unveil more plans for the U.S. version during this winter’s auto-show season.

So,if its under Versa,it should be cheaper right? By then,it will probably be marketed as a "Premium" sub compact at a premium price.
