Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: July 2009
The first — and possibly only — sales month that includes sales directly derived from the Cash for Clunkers program shook up the top 10 from months past. Oh, sure, the Ford F-Series is still numero uno, but the Focus compact also made the list thanks to the Clunker program.
Other surprises are the Toyota Prius. Yes, it’s all-new, but even with gas prices nearly $1.50 less than they were a year ago, the efficient hybrid had a record month of sales, placing it just inside the Top 10. Perhaps people paid attention to our picks for the best ways to spend your Cash for Clunkers money.

If you combine Fusion and Milan, you come to about 24,800, which would come in at number 7 - above Focus and less than 5000 behind Accord.
One of the weaknesses of having products rebadged under different brand names is that it weakens the individual sales figures for that model. People look at high sales as a sign that the product is worthwhile, so high numbers for a model help future sales.
maxwell, than Silverado and Sierra would outsell F Series. We don't combine because automakers don't combine. They have different advertising, dealers and marketing etc. Why they do it is usually because it's profitable to do so.
Dave: I was not saying anything bad about you. I was talking about a certain marketing weakness on Ford's part.
Both Toyota and Honda rely of the strong sales of Camry and Accord for buyer credibility. If Fusion sales were not displaced by Milan numbers, it would have more buyer credibility.
Oops Dave! I forgot something. Your answer to my first post sort of reinforces my point.
Ford continually stresses that the F series is the best selling truck in America for 20 years. Maybe, Silverado could claim that title if Sierra did not take away sales numbers.
I don't know what's more astonishing the lack of GM cars on the list or the fact that the last generation Camry keeps kicking the crap out of just about everything out there.
Maxwell,
Your logic is flawed. If the Sierra didn't exist does not guarantee that the same buyer would purchase a Silverado. The same can be said for Mercury Milan / Ford Fusion and any other rebadged car or truck.
WAY TO GO TOYOTA! Enough Said!
wow looks like boring is in, cant beleive the camry is still selling well, it litterally defines boring! glad to see focus made the list, bought one in 08! but i didnt get a stupendous deal like i would witht the clunker program!!!
Is Tomoco still adding the sales of the Matrix to the Corolla? If so, it is some form of creative accountability.
A phenomenal performance for the Prius, considering the new Honda Insight is a stiff in the U.S. market. Despite its lower price, Honda is only moving about 2,000 to 2,500 a month - way lower than their sales projections. Edmunds.com and a car magazine or two have egg on their face after ranking the Insight above the new Prius in their road tests.
The question is, as the Prius is becoming mainstream, which car will be driven by the "holier than thou" enviro crowd?
It is going to be difficult to make a statement if your neighbor has one too... lol.
Nice to see the Altima and the Escape in the Top ten...weird that the Tribute is not around when the Mariner and the Escape are doing great.
I don't think image drives hybrid sales much anymore. If that was the main buying motivation, people would be snapping up the Insight to get the image at the lower price. Instead they're spending a few thousand more to get an extra 10 mpg and lots more interior space with the Prius. The episode with $4 per gallon gasoline changed a lot of people's perspectives permanently. Hybrids are mainstream and are driven by all sorts of folks who simply want to burn less gasoline. Within 10 years, hybrids will dominate sales of cars and will make big inroads in the truck market.
GOSH, really Jimhenry? That's new to ALL of us on the site. Cash For Clunkers. What will they think of next!
This is a really great top ten list, a few surprises in there like the Ford Escape, didn't know that was such a popular car. I think the Prius will move up the list especially if there is an increase in gas prices. Anyone can post their own list to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.
No wonder Honda Accord is ranked in 4/10. According to "Money News” - Fri 24th Jul 2009, Honda Accord is the UK's favourite car.
6 out of the top 10 most popular vehicles come in hybrid flavors, including the Ford Escape SUV, which gets > 30 mpg. Hybrid sales in July 2009 were 35,429 hybrids, which puts Hybrid as the #2 best selling car in the US. And that's with dirt cheap gas prices.
Waiting for that hybrid F-series... boomp, there it is:

I just wanted to point out that the 2009 Chevy Cobalt XFE can still be found on lots for around $16,000- and it has $2000 cash back, PLUS many dealers are offering another $1,000 cash back because the cars have sat on their lots over 9 months or so. I also got a gm employee discount, so in the end I used my insurance settlement from a totaled pickup truck (only accident in my life and I'm almost 45) to make a cash buy of $12,6XX and that included ALL taxes, registration etc.. and most important the car currently gets the highest gas mileage of ANY sub-compact (non-hybrid) at 37MPG on the highway. I LOVE this car and am happy to see GM out of bankruptcy and making and import beater that might bring the hybrids down in price.
The 2009 and 2010 Cobalt is sold with new gear ratios, low resistance tires, and a manual transmission which increased the miles per gallon from 33 to 37, and that's what I am actually getting. It's a great buy if one gets the incentives on it! Considering it cost me only a little over $12,00 brand new and gets the highest mileage in it's sub-compact class, I feel this is a better buy than the cool hybrids that sale for twice the price. With the difference in price one could buy A LOT of gas!
Leave yourself enough room between you and the car ahead of you Terry. Those low rolling resistance tires that help your fuel economy also lengthen your braking distance significantly. And with the mediocre crash test scores, the Cobalt is not a vehicle you want to get into an accident with. Be careful!
