Recall Alert: Audi A3, TT, TT Roadster

2009a3 Audi is recalling 2,500 A3s, TTs and TT roadsters from the 2009 model year equipped with S tronic transmissions. A very small number of 2010 A3s are also included. The recall involves models built between September 2008 and August 2009.

The recall is due to a fault in the transmission that leads to warning lights going off in the dashboard. In severe cases, the transmission will shift into neutral while driving. Audi will inspect and repair all models included in the recall.

Audi will begin contacting owners over the next few weeks, but you can contact Audi’s help line at 1-800-253-AUDI (2834).

It seems odd that a malfunction would cause warning lights to "go off" on the dash. Having them come on incorrectly is certainly more common.

They are going to need to go back a few more years with this recall. My 2002 A6 with 54K miles just turned off with no warning and shifted into neutral. While I was researching the repair they told me I needed (torque converter then they added new transmission to the repair list) I noticed that the Internet was full of stories just like mine. Almost all the similar stories started "my A6 with 55,000 miles...." I had to trade mine in before it died for a mere $5000 because it didn't make sense to spend $9000 repairing it. I bought an Acura TL. Very happy with it.

Sounds an awful lot like the Chrysler minivans from 1990-current with the infamous A604/UltraDrive/41TE.
Imagine a recall of all those millions.....

I had this "repair" done on my 2009 Audi A3. As a result of the reprogramming I no longer see the current gear indicator to the right of PRNDS in the display when the shift selector is in either D or S. The only way to see what gear you are in is to go into S Tronic mode. Audi acknowledges this is a side effect of the "repair" and there is no way to reverse it. Quite disappointing.

Audi sucks.
