Recall Alert: 2001 Honda Accord and Civic

2001Accord Honda has issued a recall for Accord and Civic models from the 2001 model year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall is due to the inflator for the driver’s airbag, which could produce excessive internal pressure when deployed.

This could cause the inflator to rupture, sending metal shards through the airbag cushion and potentially harming the vehicle’s occupants.

Dealers will replace the airbag inflator for free. Owners may contact Honda at 800-999-1009 or the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.

When just one model year is recalled it confuses me. I have a 2002 Accord that looks identical to the '01 pictured. How is the airbag any different between the '01 and '02?

Adam,
They could have changed parts suppliers, used a different part entirely etc etc. Lots can change between a model year that you don't necessarily see. I'd expect they would have included both years if there was a problem with both.

It took 8 years for this problem to show itself? Wonder why.

It could also have been a defective installation robot or worker who was hungover, drunk, on drugs or just plain useless....

Darren

I read on the web that someone was killed
when the metal fragments punctured the
airbag. How come it took 8+ years to discover
this?

The recall is for the 2001 and 2002 models. I received a letter in the mail stating such. I just dropped my car off for the air bag replacement. My husband thinks it's all BS and that this is a way of getting you back into the dealership to buy another car. Since I only have 45,000 miles on my 2001, they better find something else wrong in a few years.

LoL Such safe Hondas, they deploy metal chunks at your face in event of a crash! Yay ever company should reform to this new saftey feature
