Chinese Company Preparing to Buy Hummer

Hummerh3t

Chinese manufacturer Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company has confirmed that it is the party in talks with GM to buy the Hummer brand. GM and Tengzhong have said the deal will keep in business the Hummer plant in Louisiana that makes the H3 and H3T, as well as an American dealer network and even the Hummer headquarters and operations.

We foresee a Chinese sale looming over the brand's image stateside, however, with a negative connotation among American buyers. There is no connection between GM's Hummer brand and the military Humvee vehicles built by AM General in Indiana.

It has been widely held that any company buying Hummer would not concentrate solely on the struggling American SUV market and instead focus on expanding into the Middle East, Asia and Russia. Currently, GM doesn't sell the Hummer brand in China, though it does sell Cadillacs and Buicks there.

The new owners have stressed the importance of growing the brand in China, where a growing upper-middle class is fueling a boom in car sales. This year, China could overtake the U.S. as the largest new-car market in the world.

What do you think? Does the nationality of the buyer matter in regard to a Hummer sale? Would it weigh on your decision to buy one?

Hummer seemed like such an American icon, whether thats a good or bad thing. Only America would produce something as bold and brash as the Hummer. It succeeded the Jeep as our preferred military vehcle. That being said, now that it won't be in the hands of an American company I don't think I would consider purchasing one. I am glad that jobs will be saved though, at least for now.

Thats my two cents.

tom

no one cares if you going buy one or not. You sorry butt probably own a toyota.

If you read the whole article there was a question at the end that asked if it would weigh on my decision on whether or not I would buy one so I posted about that.

No I do not own a Toyota or any other Japanese car, my car came out of Auburn Hills and I'm proud of it.

No one appreciates your rude comments.

Wow.
I was really really excited when I heard that the company was dying. It makes me upset that a company would even want to revive it. It shows how much people care about our country.
If people won't buy because its chinese, then so be it.
As long as people won't buy.

T

Make that, people that don't care about the earth. much less our country.

Did you know the average tankers can burn through a gallon of diesel and only move a few inches? There are definitely places that a hummer is appropriate. It wasn't meant to be a family or even civilian vehicle. Blame the governator to bring it to main street. But the buyer of the Hummer is an industrial company. My guess is they want to return this beast back to what it was meant to built for.

My first concerns were technology & competition on the battlefield when I saw that a foreign company was possibly buying Hummer. The writer does attempt to settle that fear by noting that there's a difference between the domesticated Hummer brand and the raw trooper carrier Hummers the military uses.

I guess I'd still be inclined to think that even the toned down Hummer has most of the underlying DNA of the military version and we should expect that the Chinese mililtary (or any other nation's military) would likely be tooling around in them in the not-too-distant future.

On another note, if the expected plan would be that any company that buys Hummer would start selling them in China/India why wouldn't GM do it themselves?

Tim

I'm glad to see Hummer continue. I might buy one just because it ticks people off like T and Jim. I wonder if the HX is going to become a reality.

Who cares? It's just a vehicle that people who want to play soldier and scream "Look at me" drive around. It's a niche toy that 99 percent of consumers weren't even interested in. For all I care, it could be made in Iran or North Korea.

While this is correct for the H1, the H2 is a Chevy fullsize and the H3 a Colorado. They just have a heavy boxy body on them. The H1 is based on the military model and has the geared hubs, making it a true offroad capable vehicle.

For China, it has been a Long March to Vehicular Victory.

it doesn't really matter that a chinese company is buying hummer. people don't really buy them. i wouldn't buy them. no one needs a hulking, towering behemoth that scares the life out of semi drivers. it seems that hummer is destined to die.

The Hummer will now be a lot cheaper to buy in the future because it will be "Made in China".

Let's be sure to monitor it for lead content before allowing it to be imported to the U.S.

To me the owner of a brand of vehicle doesn't really matter as much to me as does a good record of reliablilty, resale and mpg.

I've never been a big fan of driving big fancy cars although I wouldn't categorize myself as a hater. I hope the Chinese have better luck than we did with the brand. I somehow doubt it though.

I never saw that many people in Hummers anyway.

WSJ - The factory is only under contract until the end of FY 2010. Did you think those Chinese were suckers?

The people posting rude comments about Hummers only expose their hypocrisy by not posting the same on sports car or pickup truck articles, nor do most of these people use public transport instead of their small vehicles.
