Chevy Volt Charging Port Moved
Looking at a few new images of the Chevy Volt pre-production car that were released this week, the GM Source noted that the company has moved the charging port for the electric motor from a stylized design element on the front fender (see picture below) to a covered input that looks similar to a standard gas cap.
It’s not a big deal to most, but it is one of those practical changes that will make the final Volt a little less futuristic than the concept was. We can’t see the standard gasoline cap in two released images that show the driver’s side in profile. We can only assume it’s on the passenger side’s rear fender.

Let me guess...Neo-Marxist Barack Hussein Obama mandated it like he does everything else.
Next, Barry'll probably order GM to install automated windshield wiper fluid recycling systems in every vehicle.

Its better to keep it in the front near the grille. That way, it can be easily charged in the parking lots or garages.
Volkswagen's plugin hybrid is going to keep it in front.
Prius-III is the saviour for Toyota, hope Volt will be the saviour for GM.
Wow, the first poster, Mr. Savage (I doubt he's actually a doctor) sounds like a whiny loser who's still in shock over November.
Since they are going to mainstream success with this vehicle, the more familiar the better other than outstanding mileage of course.
Yep, Doc Savage and those of his ilk are sicko losers who don't accept reality. They think Bush was actually a hero, and their world exists only in their sick minds.

Uh..........
As for the post itself, the port is only moved down a few inches from the original position in the design element forward of the sideview mirror. So engineering wise it hasn't moved much. I'd guess this is a cost saving move as the flip forward design of the pre-pre-production model shown in image two looks complex.
Dave, perhaps Mr.Savage's comments should be removed frm this site. They contribute nothing and only waste the time of serious readers.
PhD ... hmmm ... Pig-headed Dunce???
I believe GM's statement that the charging port had to be moved to make room for the new SAE standard charging plug. If you compare the two connectors, the new one is much larger and has a larger cable - that suggests it will be able to handle 220 volts as well as the 110 voltage in the typical home. The important thing is that it remains on the drivers side, in the line of sight for people getting in the car in the morning. There still will be a few people who didn't have their cup of coffee who will back out of the garage with it still plugged in but GM has adopted a great location to prevent that syndrome.
Hybrit,
You have it backwards as GM is moving the port from the front drivers side to the passenger side rear. This will surely lead to people trying to pull-out w/o removing the plug. Why would GM make the change for the worse? Because they're GM.
DW, your criticism is misplaced, but no offense taken - the copy on the post is in error. Take another look at the top photo at where the orange arrow is pointing. The inset photo does kind of look like the passenger side rear, but the larger photo clearly shows the charging port on the driver's side front fender, just below the earlier charging port. Dave T's comments above confirm they only moved it a few inches.
plus, there will probably be some kind of warning sound if the car is started up while still plugged in or they might make it impossible to start while plugged in.
?
Did they also move the price a few inches? 40,000 is out of reach for alot of people. I'd love to get a Volt but... that's alot of cash!
Another advantage is that, cars.com staff notwithstanding, it's clearly visible to anyone who has to charge it, even to those who might have to plug it in for someone else on occasion. Not as stylish, but much more practical.
Suggest they move it to the losers heap. Fake, illegal, lobbyiest, payoff, bully bankruptcies. All makes me really sick.
