The End of the Dodge Viper?

Dodgeviper

Automobile Magazine is reporting that Chrysler never received a bid to buy its Dodge Viper operations. Housed in a relatively independent manufacturing facility in Detroit, the limited-number super car and its plant had a price tag of just $10 million. According to bankruptcy filings, no serious offers were ever received.

What does this mean? Well, we don't expect a joint Chrysler-Fiat to ever produce or sell a Dodge Viper, which leaves at least one editor here kind of sad.

"If the Viper is quintessentially American — powerful, a bit unrefined and definitely over the top — would its disappearance reflect a change in America itself? Love it or hate it, the Viper is a phenomenon. If it rockets quickly and noisily into the sunset, it will be missed," says senior editor Joe Wiesenfelder.

Let us know if you will miss the Viper — over the top or not.

I always thought it was a lot better looking than the Corvette. I am not a Chrysler fan by any means, and the Viper will be the only model I will truly miss.

JD

the viper is the only thing that kept me hoping that chrysler survived, without the viper ill be A-ok with chrysler dying. because aside from the ram, the viper is about the only thing that chrysler makes well.

A shame, the Viper was a real bargain and true sports car. Gobs of power and great handling under well under 100k.

TK

I thought the Viper and its operations were profitable for Chrysler, even if it was just marginal its still a profit.

Too bad. The Viper was the coolest vehicle Chrysler had.

I liked them a lot with the design updates, say the last 4 years...that is, until the person in the driver's seat decided to turn the key.

How many cars get a TV series named after it? Not many.Stingray and Viper. And Viper has been the thorn in the side of many a supercar these past 15 years.Chrysler engineering at its best? A car that Shelby wishes he had built? A car that Walter P Chrysler would be proud of? Sure enough. However its surely out of place in these tough times.Had they gotten a 500hp electric motor in it,or been able to run it off hydrogen, they might have had a chance....but these days a car that costs that much, sucks that much gas,and sells so few,is not "P C" today.

Stellar

Even though I would've never had the money to buy one of these cars, I'd still miss it because like somebody said above, they do look better then a Corvette, and a lot of other super-cars. I've only seen two of these cars, in 21 years, only 2 a blue one and black one both SRT10s. Love to drive one though.

It sucks that this is happening. Question anyone Why is the Viper being slashed and GM can still fund money for the Corvette(besides the base model)Who really needs the new Grand Sport Vette if it has the same engine as the base model? nothing against the Vettes but if i had the choice between a Z06 and an SRT-10 i would have to go with the Venom

JD

GM can still make the corvette because you're going to be paying for it

What I hope happens is that cars like the Viper are made by small boutique type houses and sold as real super cars. Like Lamborghini and Ferrari.
