2010 MKS With EcoBoost Engine Starts at $47,760

Lincolnmkseco This year, Ford will begin selling its much-talked-about twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 powertrain in select vehicles, with debut honors going to the 2010 MKS.

The 2010 MKS with EcoBoost will cost $47,760, which is exactly $5,000 more than the naturally aspirated MKS with all-wheel drive ($42,760). The price bump for the MKT with EcoBoost is about the same. Destination adds another $825.

For that price, you get a 355-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 with 350 pounds-feet of torque. The MKS is able to achieve that sort of power through the use of twin turbochargers and direct injection — in Ford marketing speak, that’s referred to as EcoBoost.

The MKS with EcoBoost has all-wheel drive standard and has achieved 17/24 mpg city/highway in preliminary testing. The non-turbo 3.7-liter MKS with all-wheel drive is rated at 16/23 mpg.

The 2010 MKS with EcoBoost competes with more expensive high-performance sedans like the turbo Audi A6 ($50,100) and BMW 535i xDrive ($53,400). The 2010 MKS with EcoBoost goes on sale this summer.

Other features on the EcoBoost MKS:

  • Standard 19-inch aluminum wheels
  • Standard push-button access and keyless entry
  • Standard ambient lighting
  • Standard adaptive high-intensity-discharge headlights with auto high-beam
  • Standard rain-sensing wipers and rear-window power shade
  • Optional self-parking feature ($535)
  • Optional adaptive cruise control with collision mitigation ($1,310)
  • Optional EcoBoost Sport Appearance Package ($2,995)

For $6K more you can get the BMW 535XI. More brand cache witht he BMW. This is way too much for essentially a car based on a Mazda platform.

JP,
The MKS is based on the Volvo S80 platform. There is nothing Mazda about it. The Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ are the ones that were based on the previous Mazda6 platform.

J,
The MKS is slightly more powerful than the BMW (which does have that wonderful turbo 6), and it presents a better value overall. This is one of the few domestic cars that I adore.

Why does a dismal 0-60 in the mid-6s want to linger in the back of my mind?

Hopefully with the Ecoboost MKS they also tighten up the handling too...no one wants a boat of a car with "V8-like" power.

JP:

Not only is the MKS cheaper, its far larger than a 535xi. And I'm willing to bet it has more standard equipment as well.

Billy
The MKT gets to 60 in about 6.5-7.0 seconds and the MKS is about 700lbs less,so it should do better than mid 6's.

George

What is the curb weight? It is less than 4500lbs
Is it less than two metric tons? 4409lbs
by how many pounds, 50?

A dismal 0-60 might result from having to upshift into 3rd gear to hit 60mph.

How come Ford doesn't talk about the brake system on this car?

Al G.

MKS is a nice looking car. It looks good enough to lure new buyers but, not so different that it will alienate loyalist. The MKS eco-boast will be a fast car. 355hp out of a V6 is not bad. That’s V8 power with V6 fuel economy. My only 2 concerns are:

1) The price for this vehicle is $47,760 (pretty much click any option boxes and voilà! You’re at 50 large which is in BMW 535i, Audi 6, Lexus GS460 and Infiniti M45 territory. Will the new MKS be able to compete? Granted performance wise the Lincoln will hold its own. However Lincoln (in the eyes of many of those who can plunk 50 large on a car) may not yet have the same cachet as the competition? They may not give the car a second look. Which is a shame. If this car is as good as what I have read then it’s possibly the best Lincoln ever.

2) With the new Ford Taurus getting the same turbo charged engine. Will people shy away from the costlier Lincoln for the Taurus?

broq

billy,
I have been reading about this car all weekend- nowhere has anyone stated the 0-60 time. where are you getting that. Plus,- it weighs about 4100lbs- not 4500, that has been well documented

Broq

broq

lincoln had brand cachet before most of those other brands even existed. Judging be all the fully loaded MKSs that I have been seeing- it'll do just fine. Besides, everyone asks like lincolns have never been in this price range- they have. All those other cars from Audi, BMw, Lexus, etc, are barely in the 50 range- once you add some options (most of which are already standard on the lincoln) they are quickly out of the 50's

Lincoln was able to sell the Navigator successfully for years in the $50k-$60k price range so they have been here before. People shopping on brand only will not pay $48k for this car. Those shopping based on performance, space, quality and value will consider this vehicle. The only German cars with this kind of space are the S, 7 and A8. This car is much larger than any similarly priced 5 or E class. The current E350 with 268hp costs more than this.

Al G.

@Broq and OS: You both make good points. I actually like what Lincoln has done here. I have seen plenty a MKS on the road and they look good. Overall it looks to be a good value (being loaded at 50 large). As far as name goes Lincoln is luxury. I give it that. It’s just that BMW, MB, and some other have a tad more prestige among many. On the other hand many of those who can afford a car in this price point are older, wiser and probably will see and appreciate the value here. A few not so old will too.

Happymantis

Although I doubt that this generation of the MKS will hold its own against BMW and Mercedes in the performance department (especially BMW), I think its good looks and powerful engine will attract people who normally wouldn't have thought to look at Lincoln (especially after the ghastly LS), because this car is a great car on its own merits, like its size, and its price (hopefully it will hold around the ballpark of sub. $50k after options).

George

The BMW 535xi has 13.7" front rotors, 13.6" rear rotors (with 225/50 17 tires) and weighs 3900-3950 (stick/auto)
The Lincoln MKS has 12.25" front, 12.75" rear (with 255/45 19 tires) and weighs roughly 4300+ lbs.
Hopefully Lincoln will get some bigger brakes, or their published specifications are incorrect.

The MKS ecoboost should still be fast, 14@100 if not better, in the 1/4 mile. Just don't expect it to brake or corner like a german car.

Broq,

Calm down. It's just my prediction, I haven't seen any numbers on it either. Just basing what wants to linger in the back of my mind off the ~7 0-60 of the MKT according to Ford.

And while I don't think performance-wise (in terms of 0-60) will be great, I think gas mileage should be. Should be interesting as more information's revealed in the upcoming months.

George:

Aside from BMW there really aren't a ton of true sports sedans from Germany on the market. Edmunds just tested the 2010 E550 and its handling was so-so at best. Not every luxury car is a sports sedan made for attacking canyons. Lexus has done very well without attempting to copy the BMW model.

OS,
I don't think the MKS is supposed to be a sports sedan either. It's just getting an EcoBoost turbo V-6 instead of a V-8 option.

I haven't driven this one but I doubt it can rid the MKS of its bloated driving feel in other areas. And I actually like the MKS for what it is. But once you get to $50K you're playing on another level.

I like the MKS interior, but it competes with Cadillac, not the Germans. I think the A6 or 535 would win over anyone who just sat in them over the MKS. Of course they'll cost more optioned well like someone else mentioned.

Troy S.

Remember the Lincoln Blackwood? It was an overpriced F-150 with dress up parts. Was this car executed in a similar fashion?

Broq

I don't see how the interior of the 5 series could win over ANYONE. I take that car for what it is- a fine sports sedan with some luxury trim. I love BMW's, but to say that someone would choose one over something (save for the 7) is ridiculous- nowhere near the A6. Buyers choose BMW's for their driving dynamics, safety, and (most of the people that I know with them) to impress.

Broq

DT:

This car only competes with the soon to disappear Cadillac DTS. It has little in common with the CTS. There are luxury sedans on the market that don't come from Germany such as models from Lexus, Acura and Infiniti. Furthermore, Audi and MB models are really not known as sports sedans. Just BMW models. The reality is this car doesn't really compete with BMW which is fine. I don't see how it doesn't compete with Lexus or Acura or Audi models. I dont see how crossing $50k automatically rules out the MKS.

Just because Lincoln is an American brand doesn't mean their products can only be compared to Cadillac. Cadillac and Lincoln are headed in two different directions and have been for some time. Lincoln is not really making any claims to the enthusiast market while Cadillac is very serious about attracting those buyers.

Original sheth

I agree with Broq about the 535 interior. Its plain and outdated. Materials are nice but its certainly not superior to the MKS inside. Neither is the A6 from a design perspective. Its amazing how anything from Germany is automatically considered "better" even if we are talking about a 6 year old interior design that is beyond dull.

Troy,

No, the MKS is eons ahead of what the Blackwood could ever aspire to be. The MKS was developed before the Taurus (both based off the same platform), so there shouldn't be any of that "luxury parts bin" digging at Ford for the MKS...much higher quality than that.

I wanna know how ALL BMWs are able to get away with the most plain and outdated gauges in automotive history.

Original sheth

"I wanna know how ALL BMWs are able to get away with the most plain and outdated gauges in automotive history. "

I wonder the same thing. The gauges in BMWs are hardly befitting of a luxury var.

Galactus

I own a 2009 MKS and unfortunately because of a terminating lease I could not wait for the EcoBoost. That said, $ for $ no German or Japanese car match the 2009 or 2010 MKS in features, especially IT tools and audio in this car. I have my wife's 2006 X5 as a BMW comparison at it's thin on technology, especially for the price. My father-in-law's M35 looks cheap on the inside in comparison too, and it also can't match features $ for $, (HP and torque being the same). With the 535xi it appears, you get a good percentage less (incl way less HP and Torque) when you match $ for $ cost as well, plus Lincoln dealers are more willing to work on cost. Brand cachet is for the insecure and pretentious. It's an illusion. Unfortunately most Americans are bound to that. Not me, I love the MKS.

Bill S

Coming from a BMW owner , I have to say BMW is out dated with the dashboard look , and is over priced for what you get., I'm trading in my 6 series for his MKS , after test driving it for a weekend I was sold, The only problems that I have are (1) I ordered an Eccoboost upgrade and the dealer cannot tell me when it will be in he is guessing sometime in November ( this was in Early June) and the second thing is when you get the eccoboost your stuck with the Tuxedo interior leather which in my eyes is ugly , who wants seats that look like penguins and #3 the eccobost only comes in Black , You would think that since Im ordering this car I would be able to get what i want.

BrianF

Bill S,

I just picked up a 2010 MKS with EcoBoost in Triple White Platinum and Camel interior with the wood package, etc. I also have a 2008 BMW 335i Convertible and the performance of the BMW 335 is better, but the ride on NJ roads is horrible. Also, the 335i is a true sport car and the MKS is a luxury car with a performance engine. My MKS came with 20” wheels and the ride is smooth. I had a 2003 CTS, and the ride was lousy and the performance was a joke, with only 220 HP. The new CTS’s look good, but I was not impressed with the materials -- plus I wanted something different, and Lincoln only offers the heated and cooled seats and the options were all rolled in the Ultimate/Luxury package.
I was also looking at the MB E320 and E550, but the E320 only has 268 HP and the E550 V8 is too expensive toping $75K !!! So for me, paying $53 K for the MKS, fully loaded was a good value and so far I am impressed with the MKS.
