Recall Alert: 2008 Toyota Highlander, Highlander Hybrid

08HighlanderHybrid Toyota has issued a recall involving roughly 39,100 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles from the 2008 model year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall is due to a clamp used to secure an optional stainless-steel exhaust tip to the exhaust pipe.

Because of improper heat treatment, the clamp could potentially crack and allow the exhaust tip to fall off. Though the exhaust tip was only installed in 39,100 vehicles, the accessory was available after-market, and therefore all 121,000 ’08 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid owners will be notified.

The notification, which will arrive by mail sometime in early May, will give owners instructions on how to determine if their vehicles are affected. They will then be directed to their Toyota dealers for a repair.

Owners can call Toyota at 800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.

Only a problem if you are behind one on the highway.

I'm glad to see Toyota doing what needs to be done to correct this. While a dislodged exhaust tip is not a dire safety concern. It still could cause damage and possible injury if one came of and hit the windshield of another car or someone on a motorcycle or nearby pedestrian.

Parts are falling off a Toyota!!
(Yeah, we realize it isn't a big deal and cosmetic.)
If this was a Dodge or Chevy, it would be front page news.

Skinner,
You are probably right. You know the news media like to sensationalize anything and everything. Especially now if it’s Domestic Vehicle Recall. Toyota usually is quick on such recalls and generally has the reputation for being reliable. Thus they fly under the media radar when there is a recall. However Toyota better watch it. If ever it a was a serious safety recall the news would be all-over it.

One time I saw a sticker on the Range Rover:
"Parts fallen off this vehicle are of fine British craftsmanship"

I bet you don't see this kind of news on TV unless is an american brand

what next? How about the crap tires the installed. You buy a awd and then find out the tires dont hold in the snow. Only two mfg for the 245/55/19. These tires need to be recalled
