Recall Alert: 1.5 Million GM Vehicles
GM will issue a recall in May for 1,497,516 vehicles from the late-1990 and early-2000 model years. The recall has to do with models equipped with a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V-6 engine.
Some of these engines may leak engine oil that could end up on the exhaust manifold during hard braking. If the manifold becomes hot enough, it could spark a small flame that could spread to the spark plug wire channel and lead to the risk of fire in the engine compartment.
Affected models include the 1997-2003 Buick Regal, 2000-03 Chevrolet Impala, 1998-99 Chevrolet Lumina, 1998-2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1998-99 Oldsmobile Intrigue and 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Dealers will remove the spark plug wire retention channel from the front engine bay and install two spark plug wire retainers free of charge.
Owners can contact Chevy at 800-630-2438, Oldsmobile at 800-630-6537 and Pontiac at 800-620-7668. They can also visit www.GMOwnerCenter.com or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.

Hmm, how about fixing the oil leak issue first? Moving the plug wires out of the way so they don't catch fire doesn't fix the underlying problem!
Hard breaking? Braking?
Anyway, the Bonneville that has the same 3.8L was excluded?
I dont know if the Bonneville is included. These are all GM's mid-size cars. The Bonneville along with the Oldsmobile 88 and Buick LeSabre were built on a different platform I think and all shared that bullet proof 3.8L
I took my Regal in for the last recall, and it now leaks oil all over my driveway. They claim it was prexisting. Uh, there was no oil in my driveway before.
So, they just move all the flammable stuff away from the oil leak. Nice. If it bursts into flames, at least I'll get a new car out of the deal, and be rid of this p.o.c.
...Am I the only one confused as to why they're not conducting the recall immediately, rather than in May? It's not like engine fire is a small issue.
Last month, my 2000 Buick LeSabre caught fire on top center of engine where oil had collected. Fortunately, I was pulling into residence when it ignited. Doused it with a water hose to extinguish. Still had time melt about $700 worth of wiring. But cranked and ran fine on way to mechanic. Hearty little Buick.
Well, just make sure your life insurnace policies are up to date!!
Ah, more GM quality. For the life of me I can't imagine why no one buys GM any more;-)
The recall isn't in effect until May because GM Executives drive Toyota's so they don't have to worry about any engine fires. GM quality at it's finest.
GM is more quality conscious, It is a great move.
Kate
What GM Executives, thought Obama let them all go and turned GM into the first socialist company in this new post capitalist economy.
Vehicles are 6-12 years old. Not like GM makes the only vehicles in this age group that may leak some fluids after high mileage. I agree with Kate; GM is doing the right thing and should be commended.
Our "Home Depot" weekend car is a sixteen year old Camry with 212,000 miles and it still does not leak or burn any oil. I'm not surprised the General can't make a car that does not leak oil.
Toyota's don't leak because the sludge seals all the places that could possibly leak.
And we know how long it took Toyota to admit to that sludge problem.
Doing a bit of searching revealed that they will be replacing the valve cover gasket which is where the leak apparently originated. Copied this from the NHTSA Action Number: EA07008 on the NHTSA Website, Campaign ID number:09V116000,.."TO CORRECT THE SAFETY DEFECT, GM WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED DESIGN FRONT VALVE COVER GASKET AND SPARK PLUG WIRE RETAINER."...
I'm confused - is this a second notice? I already got this recall for my Grand Prix and it was already fixed. The recall I had from GM was dated '08 but it's the same issue word for word.
buick regals are awesome
Hurrrmrmmm why wait till may....ahahah isnt it convienent that all this GM worker stuff is going down at the end of april and they are waiting untill may to do the recall....its because they are waiting untill they shut doors then to have to fix all these catrs...ohhh and also do your research on the gm 3.8l engine that has been recalled on those cars its also in about 6 other models not listed. GM incor-perated that engine into almost all there larger sized engine cars because they claimed it to be one of the best engines. n Sorry Gm that you didnt make it it on Fortune 500 for 2008 bahahahaha Chevron(gas)#1 and Ford Motor Company#2 people be smart and buy something that will last you dont be stupid and buy a GM I have done my research on Fords and their innovations are much more advance then GM....Ford introduced thier ecoboost engine in 1996 without even releasing to the public that they did so....GM released the same Eco Boost engine last year what they call the Flex Fuel bahahahaha are they stupid...and also this new car the VOLT look at the sticker price on that thing and tell me its worth driving such an expensive car to save some money on gas.duhhhhh GM gas has come to a plateau why waist your money on this innovation when you are going bankrupt..
toyota or gm.. I love my country and have served it. But I will never buy an american car. sorry.
They are waiting till May for the recall, because GM will have declared bankruptcy by then!
