2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata Up Close
The 2009 MX-5 Miata is technically the 20th anniversary model, because the affordable roadster hit the market in 1989, though it was a 1990 model. The 2009 is the first light restyling of the third generation, which came out in 2005 to reviews that were mixed, although more about its design than its performance. The restyled nose is an improvement, in my opinion, as it extends lower and its headlights are more interesting in shape. I'm not sure if the five-point (smiling) grille is an improvement over the 2008 version, but it's a little less extreme than the 2010 Mazda3's, which resembles a clown, and that makes me uncomfortable.

The rear bumper also extends lower and wider, with a more prominent crease on the side. The tailpipes are now flush with the bumper. Most of the other exterior changes, apart from the new wheel designs, are indistinguishable to my eye. Mazda says they're mostly for aerodynamics and include the side sills and taillights.

The seats are new, with a bit more side bolstering. I'd have to drive it to know how well they hold you in place and how comfortable they are overall, but they don't feel too restrictive to sit in. Mazda says the interior materials are improved, particularly in terms of feel. I think this is true, but I'm disappointed to see the piano-black finish replaced by a metallic look. Mazda was smart to avoid the unconvincing-faux-metal trap, and while this is by no means a bad example, I would have stayed with the black lacquer look.

this smile is goofy. Almost like cartoon character
The fog lights look like dimples.
It needs teeth.
It's as if Mazda didn't think enough gay dudes were attracted to this car. This one's a flamer! (=
i agree, the smile looks like a disney character
Goofy, dimples, teeth, too gay, Disney character?
Jesus, there's no appeasing any non-goofy, non-dimpled toothed, heterosexual these days.
Get a grip people. It's a fine car that looks attractive enough to turn heads.
I think the car looks great! There's nothing wrong with the grille. Many manufacturers have used the "5 point" grille styling for years now.
This grille would actually work great, EXCEPT fort the Mazda logo in the middle. That logo comes off looking like a nose, and makes it appear a 6 point front end instead.
I love this burnt orange or gold color. Why isn't this color available in the 2009 model?
I love my 09 Miata. It is all I need.
It's my prom queen on steroids.
This silly front end should really help solidify the Miata reputation as a Chick car.
