Recall Alert: 2007-09 Mazda CX-9

CX-9 Mazda has issued a recall for 30,600 CX-9s from the 2007-09 model years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall applies to CX-9s equipped with power-adjustable seats with a memory function. The power seats can potentially short-circuit, causing seat malfunctions that increase the risk of accidents, NHTSA said.

Dealers will inspect the seat harness and fasten the seat frame with a cable or tie free of charge. Mazda expects to send out recall letters to affected owners by no later than March 9.

Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

"Dealers will inspect the seat harness and fasten the seat frame with a cable or tie free of charge."

What are they fastening the seat frame to, with the cable or tie, and how does that decrease the risk of accident?

The sentence itself doesn't make much sense to me either.

I would assume that by harness they mean wiring harness. If it is damaged it will be replaced. If not damaged they will fasten the wiring harness to the seat frame.

I am assuming that the short circuit in the seat is due to the wiring harness being secured improperly and was getting warn through with regular use and grounding out.

Basically, the covering for the wire harness behind the seat cushion can get damaged. If it does, then the core wire may come in contact with the metal substructure – which would short circuit the system. If that happens the power seat may be uncontrollable.

I apologize if I wasn’t clear enough in the post.

The sentence should then read:

"Dealers will inspect the seat harness and fasten [it to] the seat frame with a cable or tie free of charge."
