Nav Devices Could Save You a Speeding Ticket

SpeedtrapMap Shannon Atkinson noticed a trend on his gearhead site, Njection.com: A topic of much interest to motor-heads is the location of speed traps and photo-enforcement cameras. Based on that discovery, he got the idea to create Speedtrap.

Speedtrap uses drivers’ tips along with Microsoft Virtual Earth to pinpoint different types of speed traps — from the human to the mechanical — and warn drivers about those locations in hopes of helping them avoid tickets. This information can be downloaded to portable navigation devices, ranging from TomTom GPS units to an iPhone.

The community of speed-trap tipsters can warn you about all the hotspots along a given route throughout most of the U.S. (as well as London, Rome and Toronto). The funny part is that Atkinson says cops like the idea as well. After all, even if people only slow down for a few miles of a possible speed trap, at least they are slowing down.
